Defensive scheme changes still evolving

With an in-house defensive coordinator now joined by a new defensive consultant, change is in the air for a UL defense that's permitted plenty of passing yards so far in 2014.

I have no problem with utilizing LBs as temporary pass defense time machines.

The worry then becomes susceptibility to the run.

So then success totally shifts to the Line and their ability to stop or contain the run. Contain at least long enough for the LBs to refocus from slowing up the pass routes and confront the run.

Whether Coach Wally has the consulting capabilities to help us or not, we have to credit Hud for seeking a strategy to address our defense. If this is how Hud chooses to transform our defense into improved scheme, assignment/positioning and defensive fundamentals, I'm behind it 100%. Hud feels comfortable and confident in his former friend and colleague. We've been complaining about our defense, and he's giving this route a try.

I'm not really all that interested in putting a microscope to this decision, at this point. My vantage point remains watching how our team performs on the field.

I think he is referring to zone coverage. Linebackers job will be to line up on the slots and jam them at the line of scrimmage to slow them down and knock them off their routes giving the safeties more time to react and cover.

I'd rather give up an 80 yard pass on 1 play that lasts 10 seconds than give up an 80 yard drive with first down after first down that leaves our defense on the field for 8+ minutes on one drive.

just want to remind you guys of something and I am not defending the defense we have been playing but if you do man up.......you can get beat underneath.....if you cover and the QB breaks an opening you are in real trouble....you can get beat deep if the safeties can't get to their areas or lose their man.....the run support isn't nearly as good as zone.....just things to consider!!!
