A question about Rebowe. Bill bentley, white, etc were good but not lock down studs when they were here. They get free agent deals in the nfl and we find out they are really good DBs. I dont think UL coaching turned them into NFL caliber type players. Is it possible that Rebowe cannot coach these talented guys to their full potential? Is it possible that with a different coach they would have been studs at UL? We always seem to be moving guys around n the back end. Just a thought.
Bentley was drafted, and all the names I mentioned were pretty damn good when they were here, not sure what game you watched. 1 DB cannot make a good defense. To mention those guys in the same breath as what we are currently seeing is insulting. Those guys did what they did with zero help up front. In other words, our defensive woes do not rest on rebowes shoulders.

Stewart, Willis, and the consultant I'm sure are all highly capable football coaches. But like in any other sport, you are as good as your players. Defensively over the past three years, it just seems the guys they have recruited haven't worked out. There are some exceptions like Patt and Anderson from last year plus a few others, but for the most part I just don't think alot of these guys are a good fit. This team doesn't seem to be real athletic upfront and the secondary continues to look lost. Scheme may be an issue, but I think many of the guys they signed just haven't blossomed into what they thought they would be at this level. Regardless of stars and rankings recruiting is still a crap shoot.

crazycajun-Corrected 3rd rounder. And I stated that they were good but I dont remember anyone drooling over the chance to draft them. And of course one dominant shutdown DB can make a defense better. Being able to trust that one guy to bottle up the Os best WR allows way more pressure to be brought or more zones and double coverages to be played. If not Rebowe's, then who is at fault for the clown show we have when the other team brings someone across the formation and we go into full circus mode, or when they hit a slot receiver running through the middle of the field with the closest db 10 yards away.
I dont think the blame rests totally on Rebowe but he is getting "his" guys now right? How is it that we cant find corners so we have to switch a safety to corner?
pathfinder-Good point. IT just seems like we should have found 1 guy!

One guy they sure could help is suspended. We list a couple through attrition and had a couple flip commitment last minute. However nobody is looking good in this scheme, so you think they missed on everyone?

All anyone ever talks about is how talented these guys are!

Outside of THIS staff but not HIS circle.. How much more evidence do you need? Not only does this defense not work, it's not even close.

The year that he coached with Hudspeth at North Alabama they were 13-1 and made it to the semifinals. Hmmmm... It works both ways champ. Like I said, let him consult. Evaluate the results.

Edit: The year before, they were 4-7. The year after, they were 5-5. Obviously there were other changes, but Matt Wallerstedt was part of it.

Here are some stats from 2003 when wallerstedt was Huds DC at North Alabama. And I realize it is a different level but it shows they worked well together...

    PPG 14.1
    YPG 295.6
    106 TFL
    39 Sacks
    20 INTs

Not saying this guy is a savior but it can't hurt having someone who Hud trust and who has done good work with him in the past.

More FACTS. That was CLUTCH Maybe Hud brought someone he actually trusts and will allow him to take hold of the defense.

Clutch, different level means that he was working with a lesser caliber of player as well.

I don't know how much a consultant can really help but it's worth a shot.

I'm not saying they missed on everyone, but I think you answered your own question. The suspended guy can play, and if you lose a few to attrition that can put you in a bind. Nobody expects a defense to be solid at all positions, but they seem to be lacking at many positions. When you see a player like Patt flip-flopping from Safety to DB to Safety, the other guys you recruited are not as good as projected.

I think it is important that the coaching staff step back and ask themselves if they are teachable. The reason I say this is they continue to run the same defensive scheme and expect different results. The results should "teach" that what you are currently doing is not effective. Doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results is insanity.
