Thread: Roberson status still up in the air

  1. Default Re: Roberson status still up in the air

I still think Roberson is better as a 2 or 3 with short spurts as a point forward. He can make plays but never has consistently after high school. Plus, I think he would be a defensive liability as a full-time point against dribble penetration. But that's just my opinion. Roberson has the potential to make me eat those words.

He can't go anywhere else in D1 because he would have to sit out a year and that would end his eligibility. I guess he could go to a non D1 school. I wonder what the "requirements" are for him to be let back on the team. If they are as challenging as what Tony Robichaux demands in this situation, he will truly have to earn his way back. If the demands are as severe as they should be, history shows he does not have the work ethic to meet them. Basketball wise, he has ability but tends to turn the ball over way too much. Many times he makes ill advised passes near the basket because he leaves his feet without knowing what he will do when airborne. If he learns to keep those type of mistakes to a minimum, he can help the team.

THen on defense you simply do Half Court Traps and matchup trapping zones, DON't PLAY MAN TO MAN, ( we get lost ). On rebounds and steals, we find Lamar and push the ball up the court, if nothing happens isolate grandigo from time to time, or run pick and pops with Bureau, Gradnigo, and Roberson. Mix that in with a few set plays, u got success. This gives you Dison the defensmen off the beanch, Daigle the zone killer, and another PG in McCoyy. As well as Wallace to give Batiste breathers... Basketball is what I know. Along with earning the respect of the Team you either coach or play for, is essential to being successfull in any sport. If they need me to run and extra practice or two during the week, with the team, let me know. For a small fee of course, LOL... I talk to those guys all the time, they want to win, they just need TO BE TAUGHT HOW TO WIN!!!

I like your suggestions on how to improve the team. I just wonder if Roberson would turn it over too much at point (assuming he does come back and I am skeptical he can earn his way back). I do like the idea of making the defense more zone oriented. Every time we try it and a guy hits a three, Coach Lee loses patience with it and we go back to man. With all the long arms we have, we should be more effective in zone. If we need to shut one guy down, we put Dison in and run a box and one. If Dison is on in a normal zone, how about putting him at the top where he can pressure the ball. Some of the coaches last year said Dison was the injured guy they missed the most.

He didn't show anything last year that would lead me to believe that he can be the "spark" we need. The only spark he provided was in ____ing everybody off on the team. He obviously had no chemistry with any of the players on this team and he obviously didn't do it at other universities either since we're his 3rd or 4th stop. Just put yourself in Lee's position. If this is your make or break year and you have to turn it around in this program, do you want to hinge part of that on a player that obviously has issues and helped this team implode last year? I wouldn't want that responsibility

The idea is to use the type of zone D that uses a team's athleticism to its advantage. You use 1/2 court trapping zones and allow the D to use its speed and quickness to create turnovers. You can possibly even extend it to a press which I've wondered for several years why we don't run this more often to use our depth and athleticism. I don't feel like you want Roberson running the point. He was like a fish out of water last year and had quite a few turnovers as well. He is slow on D and I don't find that he really hustles well.

I don't think he could do anything to make you eat those words. He is slow and lazy on D and he doesn't have the speed to guard a good #3 much less a PG. If you can't stop dribble penetration, you can't guard the perimeter unless you're giving up layups. I say we cut our losses with him and develop some chemistry.

He can flat out fill it up, and a player that can shoot, is more comfortable when he knows the team wants him to pull it before they even pass him the rock... _

A big guard who can see over the entire floor is a luxury, not a necessity. These types of players don't come around as often due to their unique skill sets. Having guys who can play 3-4 spots on the court is what makes them in such high demand. I'll take a guy who can play within an offense, play D, hustle and not be a cancer on his own team. However, Roberson has shown none of the above so I truly hope we do not bring him back. If it was my butt that was in a sling and I needed a great year to save my job, I wouldn't place so much on a high risk player.
