Thread: Haack comes through big in relief role

Haack came into the game and completed two passes that B-Way has yet to complete all season. And for all of the fans who keep saying the only time we have seen Haack is in garbage time well that drive should end that argument.

That was the most clutch drive of the season and I am convinced that the outcome of the game would have been different had Haack not been under center!

You may call it luck but that was a great pass. Just because we are used to seeing the ball fly into the stands when B-Way is rushed doesnt mean that it is luck if Haack throws the ball where a reciever has a chance to make a play.

    He could have said nothing.

So he could have ignored the question?

I didn't see a question that was asked.

Although I missed the game because of work I did talk to some of the players last night. They feel Haack is better than last year and if needed he will do better, but they still believe their best chance to win the SBC is with TB leading the way. The most impressive thing they said was his leadership is second to none.

I thought Broadway looked tentative and a bit shaky at first much like the Tech game but sometime in the second quarter after a number of fad calls by the ref he seemed to come out in fire and showed flashes if the old TB and led the offense on a very efficient scoring drive with a good mix of pass and run. Hope he keeps it up. And I hope we see Haack continue to improve and get some playing time. I thought he looked very good when he got his chance.

I saw very little from our offense last night. Remember, this GaSt team is probably the worst defensive team in the SBC. Broadway was mediocre at best, though he did actually make a couple of decent throws down field. The last TD, he was lucky he was throwing to Robinson. It looked like a wounded mallard flying down the field.

TB still can't read a defense or find a second or third receiver. It is not an accident that half the receptions that Pettis and Harris have on the season have come in the very little time that Haack has been in games. With the exception of the shovel pass to Riles, all of Haack's passes were to a second or third option. The throw to Pettis was as well thrown a seam route as you will ever see. We lose TB's running threat when he is not in, but Haack makes offensive weapons out of guys who are just blockers when Broadway is playing.

For the most part our play selection was very ordinary and unimaginative. If that doesn't change and TB stays as quarterback, we will be lucky to score 20 points total in our next two games.

Defensively, I thought we played better, overall; at least we pressured their QB pretty hard and got away from the 8 yard cushion on every receiver on every play. Still played too soft, I thought, but much improved. We probably would have been better [defensively] last night if the SBC had actual competent officials.

Our linebackers, as a group, can't cover anyone, and we still can't hold containment on the edge in the running game, which I suspect is also a LB issue.

We are a poor tackling team; we rarely get square on a runner and wrap up, and even their little guys seem to get an extra yard or so after contact.

Agree on most of your comments VB, but I thought TB had very nice game. Sure, we've seen him play better in the past, but he executed the offense better, threw more accurately and didn't see one slide all night. That's progress which is better than regress. Also, I heard from an insider yesterday that he doesn't have the same hand strength as he had prior to his injury last season. IMO, this "fact" would have been out there already, but if true, that would explain some of the problems we've seen in his passing game this year. His release point is lower again and looks more like a push than a pass sometimes. Again, if the difference in his throwing motion is related to that injury, then it looks like he's making adjustments which seem to be working. He showed a lot courage last night and excellent leadership on the sidelines. Geaux TB! Geaux Cajuns!

Rick, I thought he had a nice game for him, all things considered; but I still think that his play allows teams to stack the box to shut down the running game. Robinson did his usual incredible job last night, and we called passes that TB can throw, for the most part. Those things helped, but I still think our running game [and passing game] would be better with Haack, simply because the 2/3 of the field in which TB cannot threaten defenses will have to be protected with Haack at QB.

I'm just happy we got the W last night, with some of the calls against us and the way we were playing leading up to this game. It was good to see Brooks come in and make some nice throws and more importantly, look comfortable and confident doing so.

    I agree whole-heartedly with this.

It is pretty obvious that Hud will not play Haack unless he absolutely has to do so. He had great opportunities to give him some playing time vs Ole Miss and Boise St. when the games were out of hand which would have given needed experience for Haack to come in and flourish in clutch situations like last night. Cudo's to Haack for delivering in the situation he came into last night. I sure hope that TB and the offense can regain their old form as we have not achieved the offensive rhythm and consistency we have imposed on opponents over the past 3 years.
