Thanks! I really do understand the whole argument for both sides, but I will admit I am more for a U.L.L and ULM (for obvious reasons as looking as a lower level school) Well the reason I said that was because I was banned for about 2 weeks from a popular LSU site for posting that in response to a flamer.

"we are not obligated to follow the law, only the university"

It does clearly state Alumni associations, athletics, public relations. But we know they'll never enforce it (but if they wanted to boy that'd be tough i think its a $1000-$5000 fine per day for violation of this law until corrected or until 1 year to where they will cut athletic funding).

The use of the two-letter University of Louisiana abbreviation, “UL,” and/or the phrase “U of L” are prohibited by the university or any of its affiliated organizations (alumni associations, development foundations, bookstores, etc.). For academic, public relations, athletic, as well as other purposes not specified, the use of the University of Louisiana abbreviation must always include the abbreviation for the municipal location of the institution. For example, ULR is appropriate for University of Louisiana at Rayne. _

Yes, you are correct. But, where does it say that referring to ourselves athletically ONLY as Louisiana and using L, not University of Louisiana and not UL, is prohibited? And, where does it say that alumni, fans and media MUST refer to it using "at Lafayette"? It doesn't and that is my point.

    LSU 1860
    Northwestern State 1884
    LA Tech 1894
    UL-Lafayette 1900
    Southeastern LA 1925
    UL-Monroe 1931
    Mcneese State 1939
    Nicholls State 1948

am i forgetting anyone of the top schools?

I guess it depends upon the interpretation of the law. the law says you can't use anything referring to yourself as a lead, main, or flagship. That pretty much wipes out everything that doesn't include some sort of regional tag. Now if you can change your name to LU and Louisiana University I don't see anyone being upset with that.

Interestingly, that is also a suggestion I made. Like the University of Oklahoma - OU, University of Colorado - CU, University of Nebraska (Lincoln) - NU, University of Kansas - KU, we could refer to ourselves Athletically as LU which would solve that problem. But, changing to Louisiana University would likey require an official name change, thereby leaving ULM as the only remaining UL university in the UL System which requires 2 universities to be UL. But, what if Southeastern decides to become UL Hammond or Northwestern becomes UL Nachitoches (is that spelled right)?

    Actually it's spelled Nachitrash.

Although the LU name sounds like the best thing I think using it would be a dificult transition. I'm not a huge fan of the single L but it is the easiest transition, it just wouldn't look very attractive. I'm for it if it gets the "Lafayette" tag off of our name.....athletically of course.

We don't have to make any changes If we just promote LOUISIANA on everything and a L because as much as this guy whines we are not breaking any law.

First of all Southeastern's enrollment has just in the past decade or so exploded, due in large part to 2 major factors: first, the advent of selective admissions at schools such as LSU, UNO, & UL (Lafayette) pushed a number of students toward Hammond; and second, the population on the Northshore (especially St. Tammany & Tangipahoa parishes) has grown tremendously during the past decade. So SLU has just about caught up to us in enrollment. We have been in the 15-17k range for a long time, in part due to the implementation of said selective admissions.

Last I heard, LSU was in the upper 20's (close to 30k). Maybe in the past few years they've gotten back over 30k. So you're correct about us not being close to them. But, you are are off about the the other 3 - Ole Miss, Miss. State & Arkansas. Last I heard, we were bigger than all 3. I believe I recall that each of them was in the 10-15k range.

And who said anything about us saying we are a flagship? That is all coming from the critics. BTW, we didn't just "artificially" decide to call ourselves "University of Louisiana". In 1984, the state Board of Regents (predecessor of the UL System Board) officially changed our name to University of Louisiana (NO city tag). It didn't take long for the Huey Long crowd to get it overturned. _
We definitely have a larger student enrolment than Ole Miss. Miss. State is probably around 20K or a little over(largest in MS) and I hear ARK would be in between.

If we would just start a winning tradition, it wouldn't matter what we were called. Ragin Cajuns is the best moniker we having going and we should exploit it to the utmost.

When I travel and mention UL people ask "you mean LSU? When I say Ragin Cajuns they say "yeah, the school in Lafayette". At least they know us by that name.

But unfortunately when people ask you what school you went to you can't say Ragin' Cajuns. I do agree that it is a great name and something we should definately take advantage of.

    Exactly.

Look at any football schedule published today.

You don't see schools listed by their nicknames, do you?

Look at ours. Our first game isn't versus the Jaguars. It isn't even versus the Southern Jaguars.

    We play Southern that day.

I've discussed this at length many times before on this board, but we have the marketing of our name completely backwards.

Found my rant from months ago:

There is nothing we could do that would forward our identity as UL more than puting UL on the helmets just like we have them on the baseball caps.

The Ragin Cajuns nickname is great, but we are obsessed with it, to the point that we have almost abandoned the marketing of our university name in athletics.

For example, look at Marshall. They have a big fat M on their helmets, and you have to be standing within 2 feet of a player to be able see the word HERD on their jerseys.

Their very popular slogan is "We Are Marshall".

They have a great nickname in Thundering Herd, but they understand that the actual name of your university is way more important than a nickname.

The main reason why there is so much confusion about who we are or what exactly is our name among the general public is because WE are more confused than them.

We have the marketing of our school athletically completely backwards.

It's all one big train wreck, and few people want to admit it.
