Doesnt matter how impressive he was this year. Tommy John takes 2 years to fully recover and he was low 90s all year. Teams draft on potential, not how good his record was this past year.

Just from what I've heard, I would not be surprised if he goes to pro right now.
The normal recovery time for Tommy John surgery is now anywhere from nine to 18 months from a physical standpoint. According to a recent medical journal report, the average recovery time is 11.6 months. But the mental standpoint is usually the more important factor.
If you remember, B.J. Ryan was back in less than a year after his surgery. Such a quick recovery, though, is not always the norm.
I'm sure he had a price tag going in. Teams will skip you unless they know they can pay you in your money year. This is Greg's money year. He loses all leverage as a 5th year senior. Draft stock = price tag. 5th year seniors get a Happy Meal and a plane ticket. Which is why you see low dollar teams like the Royals and A's load up on college seniors they can sign for green stamps. If they develop, then great. If not they get another crop next year.
The bonus can be significant for that slot. Teams have a budget for bonuses. There are overdrafts that are signed for below slot money in the top rounds. MLB has no problem with teams paying below slot. The Red Sox paid a 14th rounder $450,000 two or three years ago.
From people I know it generally takes ayear to get back on the mound and a year to get your command back, if it comes back. Ryan is on the mound and a mere shadow of his former self with a fastball from 82-86 and poor command. He's not very good right now, but getting better. you have to pitch to get better in that situation. Given our situation Greg should have been pitched more this year.
Guys, ball one, ball two, and then a hit batsmen is what killed Greg this year. He does lite up the gun, but that doesnt win games....that gets you drafted. I'm not agruing the fact he was comming back off of surgery, but he didnt pitch very well at times this year. If he does that in the minors, he will not be there very long. If he does descide to turn pro, he must regain his control and learn to pitch. there are lots of 90 plus mph fastballs in pro ball. Best of luck to him on whatever descision he makes
