I don't know if you guys realize it, but the budget cuts to higher ed will hurt sports. If we undergo 20% cuts for two years in a row, UL will be hard-pressed to justify transferring the full allotment to athletics while the rest of the campus is undergoing severe cuts.
Tuitions will go up, which means enrollment goes down, which means UL's budget declines further.
Our academics will decline, which means we will be less attractive to the smarter athletes. Which means a smaller pool of recruits, and more problems-- in the classroom and in town-- with the athletes we get.
Finally, you want student fees for athletics? Students vote for those. How will students vote for athletic fees if they can't afford tuitions?
It's time to stand up for UL. Senate Bill 335 is trying to restore SOME of the funding to higher ed. The lead article on ultoday.com has a list of Senators, with contact info.
