I am not saying that LC is anywhere near where we are, but is Lafayette College either? Some have certainly used that one as a reason to say we need to get away from the Lafayette being in our name. Do you want to go through all of the trouble just to have two IN-STATE schools with names that we are way too similar to? I think not. _
While I respect your right to your opinion, I think your argument is bogus. Do people get Oklahoma/Oklahoma State, Michigan/Michigan State, Ohio/Ohio State, Florida/Florida State, etc. confused? I just don't get this line of thinking. I believe it usually stems from opponents of our name change. I agree with HoustonCajun that we need to get this name issue straightened out ASAP and then move on. In the end, it is all about the product we put out in the classrom and on the athletic fields/courts which will ultimately determine the impact of the name.

There are plenty of school initials that are the same! If this is your arguement then you need to be trying to promote the return of USL. Then you would have your unique name that you are seeking.

And not to add more fuel to this arguement that we are not "UL Lafayette," we are "Louisiana," but if you ride around town and people have a sticker on their car they ALL say "University of Louisiana Lafayette" or "UL Lafayette" on them. Granted I know that this is the only way you can buy them, but how about we do a little alterations when you purchase your sticker. Take some scissors to it and simply cut off "Lafayette." Trust me, you can't tell at all. This will be a big way of promoting "University of Louisiana" as our name. If you have a "UL" sticker with "Lafayette" below it, I suggest you do the same. Just a suggestion and another way to help the names "UL" and "University of Louisiana" stick.

Also, APB seems to think the LU acronym was to change the name of the university to Louisiana University. If so, that is incorrect. OU is the University of Oklahoma, CU is the University of Colorado, KU is the University of Kansas. LU would still be the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The LU would be used like OU, CU and KU as an acronym. It's intent was purely to circumvent the required use of "at Lafayette" when the "University of" and "UL" are used. Therefore, if Louisiana (without the University of) and LU (rather than UL) were used like Oklahoma and OU, use of "at Lafayette" would not be required and that would allow a single identity with the abililty to market both Louisiana and LU in any way we choose. I get that many people do not like LU. I, too, prefer UL. Again, this is just a discussion board and we were trying to find a way to circumvent the law. On the other hand, IF the university were to say "We are Louisiana" as it did for Homecoming and officially promote Louisiana and UL, and allow us to purchase officially approved UL gear without "Lafayette", this discussion would end.

I am being realistic. Why do you think we are not able to use UL? We did change our name in '84 and were blocked by LSU and the state. Do you think LSU would not block LU? We also do not have the name history of the other schools and for example in Michigan, MSU constantly lives in the shadow of UM. I am ok with using the "L" instead of "UL" on things, but I think that LU will not solve what we are trying to do. Everyone needs to forget that idea. Bogus my ass, we would not move forward with that one, it would be another black eye for the school and we are running out of eyes.

*Also, I do not think it would "change the name of the university", but I do think it would add ANOTHER variation to the mix when we already have way too many.

If this were to happen you may never see a name discussion on this board again.

While that is a great suggestion, it further illustrates the rediculous lengths we have to go to in order to get our name out there and to get items we want to display and wear. Another perfect example of why this needs to be addressed publicly.

I agree but it's a way for us to force the issue and help it succeed. While I am with you on the use of "LU" or "L" I doubt that either of those will happen. This is a way to get the name "UL" or "Univ. of Louisiana" our there.

I went a step further and designed and had my own UL sticker made. It is a white UL Ragin Cajuns sticker with red trim with the L shadowed by the state of Louisiana in red with a small black fleur de lis where the city of Lafayette is located. It was done by a firm in San Antonio owned by a UL alum. While I personally think it is the best looking UL sticker around, it also is indicative of how rediculous it is that I have to go to that extreme to get what I want. It is simply time for all of this to get corrected. UL athletics needs to be branded and marketed and we are losing tremendous revenue, advertising and recognition in not doing so. We are going to have that breakout game soon like Appalachian State did and all the national acclaim will come under Louisiana Lafayette. The marketing bonanza that followed ASU's win over Michigan is still being impacted today. What a lost opportunity that would be for UL.
