I've seen some people say ULA (not UGA and UVA). I think LA might work, but I don't know. LU would be confusing, I think.

I'll open up a whole mess of Pandora's worms here, but I never saw what was wrong with USL. It was unique and rolled off the tongue. And if you don't want double-directional, just change the name to University of South Louisiana.

We could have had that name 35 years ago with no fuss at all. It is perfect. It is unique. It perfectly describes us, and would have been absolutely so from the beginning. Lost opportunity if you ask me.

I know what you mean but some schools like Tennessee have been known to sell hats with nothing but a "T" on them.

I was about to say the same thing. Tennessee, Memphis, Indiana, Marshall, Alabama....etc. There are a lot of schools that put a single letter on their uniforms. I'm not saying that at the bottom of your TV screen you see a score that says "L-21 ULM-0." That's a whole other argument. I am simply saying use the "L" on our uniforms and memorabelia so that "Lafayette" does not have to be included. When someone refers to our school the "L" logo may draw more people to say "Louisiana" being that there would be just one "L" on the uniform and no use of "Lafayette."

As far as television you may see this cause media to use LOU, ULA, LA, etc.

I liked someones idea in a previous post of using the states abbreviation of "LA." I know my artwork sucks but I attached a little "LA" logo. Also included 2 "ULA" logos but don't think those would work. People would think it was for UL Alexandria.

I have a throwback LSU baseball hat with just an "L" on the front. Does this mean I could wear it to the Tigue?

I think Louisiana University and LU would be a good move. Probably still hear some complaints from LSU people.

Kansas is KU because all the old Big Eight schools went with that ID for its schools - MU for Missouri, NU for Nebraska, for example.

I agree, I think I'm starting to like the Idea of LU..would definitely be unique. Lsu needs to give us a break on the name thing. We deserve the recognition !!!

Nothing is new LU= Lamar University. (that is what they chant at games; L-U, L-U, L-U) I like UL or Louisana for the Cajuns.

I like UL too, but you can't use it legally without @ Lafayette. Who cares if Lamar is LU. Also, regarding the "L", Michigan uses an M, Texas and Tennessee use a T, Louisville uses an L, and there are many more. There is NO 1A university using LU. If we want to use Louisiana exclusively, we will need to seriously think about LU, like Oklahoma, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, etc. It circumvents the law and allows us the Louisiana and LU identity that we want, and more imortantly, it eliminates the legal need to reference Lafayette on everything athletic. Think of being able to buy Louisiana and LU gear ANYWHERE, the significant athletic revenue to be gained from marketing our gear with the best moniker in college athletics, Ragin Cajuns, and our national recognition with a name we all want and have fought for since 1984. It is a concession I am willing to make.

    Ragin' Cajuns Re: Louisiana

LU would not be cool. I think we really screwed up when we did not go after the name the is unique to us and only us- Acadiana. We could be Acadiana University and that would be better than any of these other names, and we would not be "stepping" on anyone else's toes!

Since that is a pipe dream, then we need to just use LOUISIANA and drop the U altogether on everything. It seems to work for Tenn., Michigan, etc. The whole LU thing would draw even more attention from LSU because it is so close to what they use, not to mention it is looks ridiculous.

I would certainly like to see this whole name issue resolved once and for all. I wish the university would form a committee to review the name issue, address its importance and determine what name we can use athletically and how to more effectively use that name, how to circumvent the law by using Louisiana and whatever acronym that would work in doing that such as LU, how to get the SBC and media around the country to recognize us as Louisiana, to redesign and remarket our logo with university approved gear, figure out how to market our name and Ragin Cajuns locally and nationally, build a co-op store at the athletic complex and figure out how to generate revenue from all of this. Why continue to let this issue drag on year after year? I don't know the importance the university is placing on this, but we have a university with a unique and highly marketable moniker that is severely under marketed with potentially huge amounts of unrealized revenue. At UL, it seems everything is done one item at a time and nothing can be accomplished simultaneously. As we build our infrastructure from funding to facilities, build our name at the same time, so when success is achieved, it is done so under the right identity - no more UL L, UL LOUISIANA -Lafayette or U LA LA.

Would this whole identity thing be a topic you might write an article or series of articles about, Josh, or is this a minefiled you and The Advertiser would not enter?
