Regarding the requirement to have Lafayette added when using UL, that just goes to my argument of using either "LU" or "L" along with Louisiana and we are in violation of nothing. I prefer the "UL", but am tired of fighting the battle. Is it worth it to make a change now that corrects this or continue to fight the battle in hopes of one day overcoming it, possibly years from now? We are seeing progress, but it is slow in coming and certainly not universal. I am not being argumentative, just trying to find a realistic solution to our identity problem. _
I would rather just drop the U as opposed to flipping our initials. Seems like it would be an easier transition. I doubt either will happen though.

To answer you question the "Lafayette" is on the jersey b/c UL is on the hats w/o "Lafayette" on them. The law is that when UL is used "Lafayette" has to be present on the uniform, not the individual piece of the uniform.....I think.

You know, this is so rediculous to follow. We MUST find a solution to it. I am fine with just an "L" and Louisiana. Heck, anything is better than this nonsense.

Yup.....but I have a feeling that we will have this talk for a long time b/c I doubt we get to use the UL soley for a long time (if ever) and I don't think the university has any intention fo changing the logo.

I have sent an email to Julie Dronet but it would help if others on this site sent her emails. Who knows....maybe she has never thought of using the single "L" and maybe she can clarify as to why we use the 's and "Lafayette" when using "Louisiana" as our logo.

This is really a screwed up situation. We need an Identity to call our own in a bad way. It just seems like this ambiguous situation needs to be dealt with before it goes too far... however, by the rules as I understand them, we don't have any options but to continue to confuse people. What would it take to change the name and start from scratch?.. what would have to happen?... LU Louisiana University ... would definitely be unique. It just sounds , I don't know 'backwards'....LOL.....

It seems we, the university, partialy have it figured out. We need to discontinue the use of UL. That in turn would eliminate us having to use "Lafayette." If we are to use an abbreviation for our university it should simply be "L." Also using "Louisiana" alone (we have already begun this) would eliminate the use of "Lafayette" as well. It just seems that we need to discontinue the sale of any items that have "UL" on them which would in turn take the "Lafayette" tag off all of our merchandise.

Official Name: University of Louisiana at Lafayette
    Athletic Name: Louisiana
    Abbreviation: L

    Problem solved.....

I sent an email to Scott Farmer letting him know how pleased I was to see that multiple media outlets have granted our wish of refering to our sports teams as UL and Louisiana. I also elluded to stating that I was glad to see the name game appears to be almost over. His response in summart said he was pleased as well but the name game is not over. I responded with my understanding of the law and asked why it isn't over but I haven't heard anything back. SO I guess they are making strides in getting the word out that we would like to go by UL but until I see ESPN or Fox use UL then I don't see an end in sight.

And that's something that will take too long to achieve. We need to abandon the idea of using "UL" and go to the use of the "L" on it's own and "Louisiana." It's either that or embrace the UL_L abbreviation.

There is not one college that uses a single letter as their abbreviation... not sure If (L) would work...I think UL is here to stay. We just need to empasize LOUISIANA as our primary name as often as possible..

I was about to post the same response. The single "L" will never fly and I'll give you another reason — it won't work in newspapers or TV. You're never going to see this headline: L beats Tulane.

I don't mind if they did just an L on the baseball cap, like a cursive L or something, but I think in referring to the team, you have to either embrace ULL or push for UL to become accepted.

And another name change will not further help the university's cause. You can't keep changing your name every 10 years until you find something that people will embrace.

How about using LU. University of Kansas uses KU.
