Thread: Louisiana

I am all for the use of Louisiana as opposed to UL Lafayette or continuing the fight to use UL. But on a hat it does not look good to use Louisiana spelled out. We should just use an "L" in the same font as our numbers. Something sort of like this and completely drop the use of the "U."

If we use only Louisiana and LU, it doesn't appear we have violated anything.

Here is what the law states:

"The use of the two-letter University of Louisiana abbreviation, "UL", and/or "U of L" are prohibited by the university or any of its affiliated organizations (alumni associateions, development foundations, bookstores, etc.). For academic, public relations, athletic, as well as other purposes not specified, the use of the University of Louisiana abbreviation must always include the abbreviation for the municipal location of the institution. For example, ULR is appropriate for University of Louisiana at Rayne." _
Why RISK it?? You're kidding, right? Aside from some kind of "slap-on-the-wrist" fine, what else can the State do?? I don't see them being able to legally withhold funding or anything else like that as a punishment. Besides, we've been getting away with it on the football unis for a couple seasons, now, so they can't really say anything about it now.

The football unis have "Lafayette" on them.

I thought we were getting away with it on our uniforms, but Cajun T says differently in another post he made:

"Read my post above. I have personally sent emails to our commisioner on this matter and have yet to receive an honest reply. Lafayette is on the caps and batting helmets for softball and baseball. It is located on the back and it not noticeable when it is in the same color thread as the cap. Football has had Lafayette on the collar or the sleeve in the past. You may not notice it, but it is there to see up close. We are pushing the envelope on this matter by using "Louisiana", because it is in compliance with the law. This is why Phil Steele is using it in his publication. Any time we use UL without the city tag, another threatening letter is received. We can use "Louisiana" and continue to push it legally. We cannot use "UL" without the city tag, when others are threatening lawsuits."

Cajun T says we can use Louisiana all we want, but "UL" is in violation. We can take the lawsuit threats seriously or blow them off. Or, we can use "LU" or "L" and avoid this all together. I like the UL and would hate to change. But, I don't want to be having these same name discussions 5 years from now. That means we still have an identity problem. Let's either fix it or change the law.

If "Louisiana" is legal then why do we insist on adding the 's to the end of it on some of our memorabelia. It seems that there is another problem that we are unaware of.....

I've seen them up close, from just a couple feet away. They do not.

Ask Cajun T to confirm. He says it is on ALL of our uniforms, caps, and helmets, just in the same color so it is not readily recognizable.

They do that with merchandise too. I bought a hat from the bookstore, its black, has UL in white with a red shadow on the front, and on the back where the adjustment thing would be (its the fitted kind) it has Lafayette in black. Its barely recognizable unless you walk up and look at it.

The helmets do have Lafayette on the back of them, I'm almost positive. Does someone have a picture? Pirogue? ULSUCONNMAN? Anyone else? I'll look through mine tonight.
