After questions from KATC, UL makes changes to campus parking

UL officials are caught in the middle, between students and faculty, over concerns about parking.

Friday, the university announced parking changes because of complaints from faculty and staff.

The changes deal with nighttime parking. Gates at certain parking lots were opening at 4:30 p.m. Some faculty members complained it created a bottleneck--with all the nighttime students coming in, they couldn't get out. So on Friday, the university pushed things back, opening the gates now at 5:15 p.m.

It's a decision that did not sit well with some students who had to park farther away for night classes.

Right. The notion that you should be able to park directly next to your building for your class is amazingly self-entitled.

I'd like to know faculty's definition of "bottleneck" and "hard to get out". Not taking either side here. Just think more information is needed to make a decision on who's whining here. My first instinct, though, is student safety over an extra 15 or 20 minutes for faculty to get home.

Giving tickets after 5 PM was usually a fun time. People would look astonished that they still weren't allowed to park anywhere they wanted. Also fun was keeping the pay lot booths open longer than normal. People would drive up thinking the gate was up and when they get there they realize...booth still open. It was great when multiple people would drive up at once thinking the gate was up...and it wasn't...forcing them to pay since they couldn't back up. I kept a booth open until 9 PM one night. The booth was quiet and I got paid to do my homework. A few sorority girls kept walking up to the window and asking "like...ummm...are you gonna like close the booth?"

I am lucky that I not once had to park and Cajun field and take the bus. I was lucky enough to get a parking pass from the parking lottery (who remembers that?) my 1st year and ended up living in an apartment right by campus for most of my college days. Fun times.
