Thread: Ragin' Cajuns begin march on Troy

  1. UL Baseball Ragin' Cajuns begin march on Troy

Tom Walter sat surrounded in the darkness of his office Saturday night, the only light illuminating from his cell phone as he pondered the opportunity lost.

Walter, the head baseball coach at the University of New Orleans, entered last weekend's series against UL needing only one victory to secure a berth in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament as one of the top eight teams in the league.

At the time, the Privateers were one of the Sun Belt's hottest teams after winning their four previous conference series.

This is sort of off topic, but I was listening to the UNO chancellor and UNO Foundation pres. on the radio driving through NO last week. They were discussing the financial crisis for LA state schools and the governance of one set of schools by the board of regents and the other set is governed by some other board. UNO is dealing with a 20% budget cut.

The chancellor made the case that there are too many schools in LA and some will likely go away. He said based on enrollments there is no good reason to have Southern, UNO, SE, Grambling with duplicate budgets and programs.

He compared LA with 12 state schools and 4.2 million people to FL with 11 schools and 20 million people. They didn't specifically discuss athletics, but based on the discussion, sports seemed irrelevent.

Most everyone likes the idea of cutting schools in LA unless you start talking about cutting THEIR school. Then it becomes a politicized power struggle. We can talk about it all we want, but business as usual seems to be the order of the day when it comes to progress in LA.

Exactly what I was thinking as they spoke. They also acknowledged the fact that the schools sort of functions as part of state fiscal policy, distributing budget dollars to specific parts of the state and communities like Monroe and Natchitoches rely on the schools for income, and have for years. It's hard to just s*** can them because they are redundant and mediocre. You gotta have a better reason than that, I guess.

And if you take the Pharmacy dept. away from ULM they don't really have much to live for either.

IMO the major schools in Louisiana should be:

    UL
    LSU
    LA Tech
    Tulane
    McNeese
    Southern or Grambling

The following schools should be made into JUCOs or just dumped: ULM, Northwestern, UNO, Nichols, Loyola and either Grambling or Southern. If I missed any others besides the keepers above, dump them too.

Let's see. That would be Centenary, Louisiana College, State @ A, Southeastern, SUNO and Xavier. You wanna give them all the heave ho? Even the privates? LOL

We need 3 major state Schools---LSU UL and Tech A geographical under class would allow Tech to have ULM, NSU, Southern of S, LSUS and Grambling under it------UL would have Nichols, McNeese, LSUA and LSUE---LSU would have Southern UNO SLC and S-NO under it---makes too much sense!!!!
