Seed to Skillet, the quarterly series that focuses on the process of growing, harvesting and preparing your own food, will host the third workshop of its 2014 season this Saturday, Sept. 27, with guests from the Acadiana Beekeeper's Association and the Dead Yeast Society for a special class on beekeeping and honey harvesting.
Seed to Skillet is an informative cooking demonstration and gardening workshop that focuses on living and eating in harmony with the seasons. Cooking demonstrations focus on preparing and preserving seasonal dishes and gardening workshops focus on seasonal activities that are necessary to maintain a healthy and bountiful harvest.
The 2014 series began with the basics of vegetable gardening and will progress to focusing on utilizing the natural process of fermentation as a means of preserving the harvest as well as pruning and training fruit and nut trees.
The theme of the Sept. 27 event is "Bees: Beginning with the Queen and Finishing with the Mead."
Members of the Acadiana Beekeeper's Association will teach participants how to start their own colony and members from the Dead Yeast Society will demonstrate how to ferment mead from the honey you harvest.
Participants over 21 will be able to sample the beverage, and everyone will leave with recipe cards so that they can make it in their own home.
Admission for the Seed to Skillet series is $15 per adult; children 12 and under get in free. Anyone interested in participating is asked to register for this limited seating event by calling (337) 233-4077 or email cuisine@BayouVermilionDistrict.org.
