BATON ROUGE, La. - State health officials report 11 new cases of West Nile virus, including one new death in Louisiana that brings the total number so far to five.

The Department of Health and Hospitals said Friday the new infections increase this year's total to 103.

Of the new cases, seven were the more serious neuroinvasive disease. Three were reported in Lafourche Parish and one each was in Ascension, Pointe Coupee, Terrebonne and Washington parishes.

There were also two new cases of the milder West Nile fever reported in Jefferson Davis and Livingston parishes and two new asymptomatic cases in East Baton Rouge and Ascension parishes.

The latest death was reported in DHH Region 3, which includes St. Mary, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Charles, Assumption, Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes.
