Today watching the game we were discussing HUD and his future. Some people think he's getting offered a big time job soon and will be gone, some think he will stay here forever because he likes being the "cajun royalty" that he is now.
Taking an exert from my earlier post ... imho HUD's strength as a coach ... isn't in the Xs and Os. Hud is a good coach and game changer for UL football and even UL athletics as a whole. No one can deny that. He has changed this program forever. But that doesn't make him Sean Payton. Being a college coach means you need to be able to do a lot of things. A winning program wins because of motivation, off the field conditioning/practice, recruiting, and off/on the field coaching. I think we know HUD excels at a lot of these things, but maybe the on the field by the #s coaching isn't his best strong-point. And also I have a feeling the off the coaching side of it may be an issue as well. Lets face it, when he is in the weight room working out with the team it may be a great teambuilding and motivation ... but those other old/fat coaches out there are wolfing down cheeseburgers and diet cokes while watching opponent game films while he is at the gym.
So ... do I personally think HUD will leave for an SEC team? Personally ... no, I don't. Why? Because I think and SEC type team ... needs a coach to be strong in the areas HUD isn't. A Miss State doesn't need someone to motivate the team and excite the boosters to drum up donations for athletics. All these things that HUD has done to transform UL Football ... just aren't what a big time coach needs to do. A big SEC type program doesn't need to be "transformed" ... it needs to win against the Alabamas/Auburns/Georgias, etc. and be able to do so on the field with the Xs and Os. And personally, like I said, I just don't think that is HUDs strongpoint.
So ... if not then to a major school paying hims $2-3M a year ... where would he go? Would he go somewhere else for $1M to transform another program like he did UL. Doubt it. Unless he totally starts screwing the pooch he'll still be cajun royalty for some time to come. That isn't necessarily something that he' be able to achieve elsewhere.
So overall ... I think he will continue to feed off the talk that he is always on the short list to move up ... but I think he probably knows, especially now that he cracked the $1M mark, that he has a good thing going here and he'd rather be a big fish in a little pond than a short lived footnote to another big school's football program.
And then lastly ... if he did leave ... because of HUD we've demonstrated we are willing to pay $1M for a coach. That opens up the doors to a LOT more possible candidates. And that alone has changed UL football forever in my opinion.
