A couple of the players coming in are what you would consider power hitters. Of course, that's in high school. Orgeron has been hitting the ball well lately, like 7 homers in last 12 games. Verde's got HR power, as does Lana Bowers and Runyan.
As few homers as it seems the team hits this year, they're still in the top 50 in the nation. With the way the slappers are getting on, it's going to be scary when the power does start to click.
Orgeron is starting to crush the ball and it couldn't be at a better time IMO. I have not looked up any stats on the girls we have coming in. IMO when we get into the regionals we will need our power hitters to hit for higher averages than they are currently in order to be seccessful.
I think our pitching will keep us in any game against any opponent, but our hitting is what will win those close games for us. The way we have been playing as of late I like our chances in a regional if we are away from Florida.
I believe that Orgeron has found her swing. I seem to recall that a little less than 2-3 weeks past her batting average was around .250, and as of 26 April she is hitting an even .300. Also, she has 29 RBI s and 7 Hrs. If my memory serves me correctly three of the HRs came in the series against Troy.
Other Lady Cajuns doing well, average wise, are Verde- .349, 6 HRs, 50 RBIs; Bridges- .294, 13 HRs, 45RBIs; and Runyon- .265, 5 HRs, 39 RBIs.
So, we have a little "snap" in our bats. It appears that they are beginning to play very well as of late, which is a good time with the Conference tourney on the horizon.
Too bad that Brignac is sidelined. There was mention of her being ready for the tournament, buuuttt that is a wish, I believe. If she were 100% we could really turn some heads.
Oh, well! We'll take what we have, and I predict do very well....hope I didn't put the gris-gris on them.
Orgeron is the last of the "Fab Five Class" to play, she red-shirted last season. Brignac,Bridges,Smith,Bourgeois and Orgeron all won state championships their senior year. Orgeron has had the most problems adjusting to Michael's hitting program, so she is starting to come in to her own. It's not odd at all that she struggled early against quality pitching and but she is starting to see the light now. She showed good power her senior year and played catcher at Mt. Carmel.
I used the adjective, odd, wrongly. I surmised that she struggled while adjusting to Michael's hitting, and adjusting to quality pitching. When she finally adjusted, she came upon the scene in a big way...three homers in a double header as an example(if my memory is correct). I should have attributed her success to being a good athlete, and able to adjust as good athletes do.
well not to take anything away, but Smith and Orgeron both played in 5A and on different teams, Ruston won 5A but Mt. Carmal didn't win till last season over an epic battle with Pineville and Northwestern freshman pitcher Kelee Grimes. But yes, hopefully Brignac will be back for the postseason but it raises questions, how healthy will she be? and as far as our bats, hopefully we can keep it up. Its always great to see your team peak at the right time of the season!
I never stated Smith and Orgeron played in the same program. Smith is from Ruston, I was there and watched all five play that weekend. I did think Mt. Carmel won a state championship that year, I didn't realize they lost. I watched John Curtis, Ruston and Teurlings all win state championship games that weekend. I caugth five innings of the Mt. Carmel game, but left to watch Brignac pitch.
