Thread: Kevin Keathley offered coaching gig at Louisiana?

I don't know how coach Lee knows Kevin and Byron because he has yet to return multiple messages I've left him in the past week.

Lees College is an NAIA school in Kentucky. He's listed as the head coach for the CBA's East Kentucky Miners. He's been the head coach for two ABA teams, too.
Byron has spent the past two years at Texas A&M. He played at Houston, was an AAU coach in Houston, an assistant at McClennan CC in Texas and an interim coach at Texas Southern and the Harlem Globetrotters.

This late in the offseason.. This things normally occur immediately after the team has wrapped up play.

Assistants at UL get a 12-month appointment that has to be renewed each year. I doubt Kevin would come here with any guarantees. Just the nature of the business.

That actually just occurred to me. Anyway, I forget that Lee is actually picking these guys.. It's a strange but interesting situation nonetheless.

And how do you figure it's rare? It happens alot IMO. Especially at smaller schools.
Assistants move up to the head position when the former head guy gets a more high profile position. I maintain it is rare when the head guy gets fired. Exceptions generally involve the head guy getting fired for something that is off the court (legal problems/NCAA issues etc.).

I don't think he was in any danger where he was. According to the website, he was the CBA coach of the month in December. It could be that the league has problems due to the NBA Developmental League.

Why would Bryon want to leave Texas A&M to come here. Has he been let go there? I don't believe A&M is changing head coaches.

I went to the Texas A&M basketball website. Byron Smith is not one of the assistants listed. I remember now hearing that one of the guys on our list coached at Texas A&M when Billy Gillipsie (just fired as head coach at Kentucky) was in College Station. Maybe that is correct and Byron Smith has been doing something else the last couple of years.

Response from coachkeathley on twitter to my heads' up on using UL and Louisiana (with a link to battle for a name): "thanks for the heads' up. I look forward to working with a program that has a solid tradition! Time to move over Hilltoppers"

Smith was a senior athletic assistant at A&M last season.

Here's a link to my blog entry on both guys:

FYI: The vast majority of college coaches out there refer to UL as "Lafayette".
