Thread: Juco recruiting: Good or bad?

  1. I have a Question Juco recruiting: Good or bad?

It seams that Ul is going to be doing alot of Juco recruiting in the next couple of years. As of right now, they only have a one position player coming in next year. From what I understand he is a Juco Shortstop. The thing that concerns me is that in my opinoin, the middle infield is gonna be solid for next year(barring injuries to Bostick or Fontenot). Unless they plan on redshirting this guy coming in, he might be on the bench next year. Maybe we'll some him his senior year. I understand they are working on recruiting some corner infielders.(1st&3rd). Hopefully they bring in some true freshman, cause unless you bring in a stud juco player I feal its kinda a waste. Just my opinion. Tell what Ya'll think about the amount of Juco recruitin we've done lately.Whether your for it or against it, let me know.

Its all about options. You telling me you wouldn't mind having options this year? Juco players serve a purpose in all NCAA sports.

Solid like a 230 hitter playing 2nd? It depends on where the kid that has committed is coming from, but if it a Junior College in Texas or Florida he will be pretty good. Very stiff competition... Every player that I can think of that came from Texas or FL JUCO has done very well at UL.

These kids have already proven that they can hit college arms. I don't mean to talk down on other JUCO's but LSU-E does not play good competition which allows mediocre players to stand out. If I was recruiting I would never recruit someone from a divison 2 or 3 JUCO. Go to Texas and FL and recruit studs.

JUCO players certainly have their purpose. A lot of times they are helpful in solving short term problems. Unlike some of your 18 year old freshmen, a lot of juco guys are ready to compete from day one. LSU has had some very successful JUCO guys throughout the years (including Matt Clark last year) and I'm sure UL has had their fair share as well. I played some juco ball at the same school that produced Josh Logan.

Bostick,Osborne, and keefer have produced....some more than others. JUCO guys are singed in hopes of making an immediate impact, without having to go through the freshman learning curve. I am not sure who we have this year redshirt wise comming in next year, but if that SS is a stud like he is made out to be, then we could move Keefer behind the plate, Fontenot to 2B, and Bostick to 3B. Not sure what the plans are for first, i have heard Whipple maymove there. That may be the best choice to keep his bat in the lineup with smith, olason, goulas, and bowman as choices in hte outfield. Just hope we have some impact type arms comming in!!!

Am i missing something on Bostick? Dudes hitting 248...if the SS is good why wouldn't we put Bostick on the bench? I am curious how he has produced? He has been good on D but hasn't hit anything. 248 0 HRs, not a great arm, clearly not a 3rd baseman.

We could use him as a late innings 2nd baseman for Greg next year....Maybe 248 is acceptable now, it wasn't when I played!

Try http://louisiana.scout.com/ Lots of insider info in the member portion.
(Sorry to steal your thunder "T")

or, join the Diamond Club, come to the weekly luncheons, and you can ask the coach directly about recruiting and the status of the performance now of players signed in the fall.

JUCO recruiting serves a great purpose. Say we are looking at a few SS that are juniors in high school. You bring in a JUCO guy to fill the gap. Plus, JUCO also gives guys a chance to develop into a D1 prospect if they are not developed in high school.

By the way, out of the 6 signees so far, 2 are highly rated pitchers. One from Acadiana and the other from out of state.

Coach Trahan is on the road today and through the weekend looking to add a couple of JC bats for next season. He will not be coaching any of the Cajun games this week. We signed six arms early and a good SS with bat from JC.
