  1. UL Softball #23 Lady Cajuns Cruise Past Grambling

UL - Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns softball team extended their winning streak to eight games as they rolled past Grambling 7-0 on Tuesday night at Alfred and Helen Lamson Ragin’ Cajuns Softball Park.

Louisiana received a total team effort as 20 players on the Cajuns’ roster saw playing time in the game.

Brittany Cuevas earned the start and took the win for UL. The junior worked 5.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. Cuevas tied a career-high with 12 strikeouts in a game. She retired the first nine batters of the game in order, strikeout out eight Tigers.

Cuevas gave way to Amanda Hill in the sixth inning. The senior worked 1.1 scoreless innings. Hill faced the minimum, inducing three ground outs and striking out a batter.

Shari Sigur entered the game to record the final two outs of the game. Sigur allowed one hit and got Grambling to ground out twice to secure the shutout for the Cajuns.

Offensively, the Ragin’ Cajuns collected 11 hits in the game, led by Codi Runyan and Christi Orgeron who boasted three hits apiece. Orgeron finished the game 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, a run scored and two RBI, while Runyan was 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.

Melissa Verde added a two-run home run to lead the Cajuns with two RBI.

The Cajuns were the first team to plate a runner. Vallie Gaspard led off the first inning with a walk and moved to second on a Karli Hubbard sacrifice bunt. Gaspard advanced to third on a wild pitch. Following a dropped foul ball by Grambling, Runyan doubled down the left field line to score Gaspard. Runyan moved to third on a passed ball and came around to score on Orgeron’s two-run home run. The home run by Orgeron was her fifth of the season and fourth homer in the last three games.

Leading 3-0, the Ragin’ Cajuns added four runs in the fourth inning to provide the final run differential. Kelly Cormier led off the inning with a single over the head of the Grambling third base man. A ground out moved Cormier to third base and a two-out single by Hubbard plated Cormier. Verde followed with her fifth home run of the year to give the Cajuns a 6-0 advantage. Runyan singled to right center field and advanced to second on an error by GSU. Gabriele Bridges provided the final run of the game with an RBI single to right field.

The Ragin’ Cajuns will return to action on Saturday as they begin a three-game Sun Belt Conference series against North Texas. First pitch of the opening day doubleheader in Denton, Texas is slated to start at 2:00 p.m.

Cuevas and Orgeron could be the spark to bring this team to the Super Regionals, and dare I say it... the World Series.

We need to continue to reduce errors, bring our hitters around as our slappers are already there, and nurse Brignac while Cueavas comes to full capability.

In the next weeks we could and hopefully will see this team get to where we expect them and would love to see them get.

Would be nice to see baseball do the same, I just think baseball has a lot further to go than softball.
