  7. Louisiana Campus University of Louisiana building projects continue

Editor’s note: This is the first in a three-part series on the UL campus construction boom.

LOUISIANA La. — Students can look for more construction to begin, possibly within the next year on UL's campus.

The latest additions to the campus have been a $15 million apartment complex and a privately funded $6 million art museum.

Work continues on and off the main campus with projects scheduled in athletics, research and academics. UL is preparing itself for the future, said William Crist, UL physical plant director.

“We’ve got a lot happening on campus,” Crist said. “What’s unique is that, in the next 50 years, this campus will be in shape. It’s an incredible time for us.

While some projects, such as the new art museum, hotel and business administration building are privately funded, the majority of the campus projects have been funded by student-assessed fees and money generated by the university, Crist said.

“I don’t think anyone else in the state is doing academic buildings with self-generated funds,” he said.

Work continues on renovations to the Ragin’ Cajuns athletic complex with internal improvements to the office building and a new training room and laundry and locker rooms for athletes. The improvements should be complete by the start of the football season, Crist said.

Next week, an architect should be selected to begin designs for an indoor athletics practice facility. The project will be funded by student fees. Students also approved improvements to intramural sports facilities, including a 20,000-square feet expansion to an existing student weight room in Bourgeois Hall and an intramural field complex.

  8. Louisiana Campus Growth spurs morale

Ten-year plan includes enhanced opportunities, curriculum

Editor’s note: This is the second in a three-part series about construction on the University of Louisiana campus.

LOUISIANA La. — Lewis Gale stood in the shell of a building last week that is shaping into the University of Louisiana B.I. Moody III College of Business Administration.

“We’ve got windows,” said Gale, dean of College of Business Administration. He watched a workman carry two panes up a stairwell to the third floor of the construction site.

The structure will pull the college, previously split into four different buildings, under the same roof.

“The building represents an exciting time for us,” he said. “The visible infrastructure has improved morale of the faculty, and the students are excited.”

The college has the largest number of undergraduates at the university, with more than 2,600 students, Gale said.

By spring 2005, students will begin attending classes in the new building. After the move-in, the F.G. Mouton building, where the classrooms are held, will undergo massive renovations. The two buildings will be connected by a covered walkway on ground level and an open-air skywalk on the second floor.

The building represents a “new beginning for the college,” said University of Louisiana President Ray Authement. Plans have been on hold for at least 10 years, he said.

“We had the building in capital outlay plans for over 10 years, and all of a sudden, it’s funded,” Authement said. “It’s really energized the college and the faculty.”

In the meantime, Gale will continue to build an even better business school academically. The college has developed a 10-year strategic plan to enhance opportunities and curriculum for students. That vision also includes partnerships with the community, Gale said.

“We want to transform this college into a premiere school that develops professionals who are ethical and technically capable of contributing to this culture-rich region,” he said.

My check is in the mail (seriously).

However, I thought that when we wish to contribute to a particular sport, the check should be made out to UL Football Foundation (for example)?
