True; but they will probably benefit initially from this hire and get some stud recruits. What he does with them from that point is TBD, but his track record indicates he will likely fail in the long run.

Like someone else mentioned - wonder if Theus would still be available next year, and if we would have the funds to go after someone of his stature?

Sources: Thomas will take FIU coaching job

Former NBA star Isiah Thomas will go from coaching the New York Knicks to Florida International University.

Sources close to the situation told FOXSports.com that Thomas has accepted FIU's offer and will be introduced as the school's head coach Wednesday at a news conference.

Thomas, 47, will replace Sergio Rouco -- who was fired on Monday after a 55-94 record in five years at the Sun Belt Conference school.

Thomas spent 13 seasons with the Detroit Pistons as a player and led Indiana Pacers to the playoffs in each of his three seasons at the helm (2000-2003) before being fired.

Thomas was then hired as president of basketball operations for the New York Knicks and ultimately replaced Larry Brown as head coach in 2006.

He was 56-108 in two seasons in New York before being fired shortly after Donnie Walsh joined the franchise in April 2008.



Florida International was 13-20 this past season -- its fifth consecutive losing season.

Sources told FOXSports.com that Thomas is intrigued by the opportunity for a fresh start after the way everything went down in New York and also has been informed that FIU will make a significant commitment to its athletic programs.

Thomas has, according to one source, been intrigued by the opportunity to coach in college for years and has spoken with several of his close friends about it.

I wouldn't even let that man in my house to talk to my son (if I had a son). This guy is trash. He's going to run FIU's bball into the ground. I could see how they think hiring a big name would be a big splash but not this big name. This guy has been in the news for all the wrong reasons since his playing days finished.

Wonder if FIU's trying to take FAU's lead and hire a famous name who isn't all that good of a coach to psoition their basketball program for bowl berths they don't deserve? Wierd, but believable...
