Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns softball team opened up a doubleheader with FAU with an 8-0 run-rule victory in five innings. The Cajuns amassed 10 hits in the game, including four extra base hits as they cruised to the mercy-rule win.
Bourgeois earned the victory in game one. She tossed four shutout innings, striking out seven batters. After allowing a leadoff walk in the first inning, Bourgeois retired 11 batters in a row before allowing a base runner. All seven of her strikeouts came in the stretch of 11 consecutive batters retired.
Offensively, five different UL players each had a pair of hits to total 10 hits in the game. Bowers, Bridges, Kelly Cormier, Hubbard and Christi Orgeron each had two hits apiece in game one with Bowers, Bridges, Hubbard and Orgeron each collecting doubles in the game.
Bowers led all Cajuns with two runs batted in and Bowers, Cormier and Orgeron each scored a pair of runs each.
The Cajuns threatened in the top of the second inning, but were unable to take the lead. With one out, Bridges reached base on an infield singe to short. She moved to second as Bowers made it to first on an error by the Owls. A walk to Orgeron loaded the bases, but a strikeout and a foul out ended the inning and left the score tied at 0-0.
Louisiana was the first team to score as they plated five runs in the top of the fourth inning. Codi Runyan led off the inning with a walk and Bridges followed with a base on balls. Bowers doubled to left center field to give the Cajuns their first two runs of the game. With a runner on second and no outs, Orgeron followed with a double over the center fielder’s head, scoring Bowers easily. Cormier bounced a single over the pitcher’s head to give the Cajuns runners at the corners. After an out, Vallie Gaspard drove in a run with a ground ball to the pitcher. With two outs and Cormier on second, Hubbard doubled over the outstretched arm of the center fielder to drive in the final run of the inning and give UL a 5-0 lead after three and a half innings of play.
UL tacked on three more runs in the top of the fifth inning. With one out in the first inning, the Ragin’ Cajuns pieced together four consecutive hits to take an 8-0 lead. Bridges doubled down the right field line and Bowers, Orgeron and Cormier followed with singles to give the Cajuns their first run of the inning. A fielding error by the hosts allowed two more runs to score and saw UL in front 8-0 after four and a half innings of play.
