Thread: Most Underrated Cajun Football Player

Alot of these players had careers that most people would be proud of, when I think of under rated, I think of someone who did more than anyone expected of them.

With that said, to me, Bill Sampy could be the most under rated WR we ever had. Made clutch catches, quality character, and was an excellent blocker (a role that he accepted in 2005 without any complaints). As important as Babb and Fenroy were in 2005, none of the run we had would have been possible without a veteran WR who could catch and block on the outside to give Fenroy some extra room to operate.

Sampy is an excellent choice for all-time underrated Cajun. He was underrated coming into college, and he is not given enough credit for accomplishments while here. Statistically, he is a top-10 WR.

As for this year's team, I would have to go with Falgout. He didn't get enough balls his way last year, and he probably won't get enough this season as well.

Quite possibly the best linebacker we've ever had. He was that good.

Spurrier--- "It was like trying to block a greased pig",..... referring to Pool living in the Gator backfield when the Cajuns played them in '93.

I agree Pool was a great one but I don't think he ever even had half the tackles that Bartley had in 1978. See attached link. 208 in one year.

2 interceptions and 3 passes broken up as lagniappe.

Van Cleave's name appears in the record books just as much as Babb's. I'm not saying he was great, but dude could sling it with the best of them. Of the top 9 games in Cajun history for passing yards, he has 4 of them. Of the top 5 seasons in terms of passing yards, he has 2 of them.

JVC was immature, but he was a legit D1A QB. What he needed was a good OLine and a head coach with a few brain cells. He had neither. IMHO he is better than the QB's we currently have.

I guess because the team was so terrible when Van Cleave was here it over shadowed his potential. I remember sitting next to him in Geology 101 and that cat used to take some serious naps. And would ask me what time it was every class even though there was a huge clock with red numbers in the front of class that I would point to when he asked. haha

Beau--Augi had a cd made of his 9-2 team with Nat being featured pretty much---He could scoot on the tight reverse and as you mentioned--could return 'em!!!!--Sam Roberson still marvels at Frank's uncanny LBing skills!!!!

Van Cleave gets a bad rap because he played for an idiot. He is the only 230 lb white quarterback that runs about a 5 flat in the forty running the option at that time. He had no business running such stupid plays. When you put the ball in his hands and allowed him to open it up, he played well at times. I hated him at first but then I realized that the coaches brought him down.
