It seems Philosophy was the lesser of the three. If a degree is cut and nobody is around to hear it scream does it make a noise?

As an engineer from UL, I found this quite funny.

    CLOSE SOME SCHOOLS _
Everyone always says that. Where do you save? A little admin charges?

Schools are funded on a per student basis... so you'll save because fewer kids will go to college... but that's a short-term saving, because Louisiana will continue to be dumber than other states. And percentage of college graduates is an excellent predictor of per capita wages.

    I've never understood that argument.

I tend to agree with you. Sometimes it makes you scratch your head at the need for a couple of our colleges (SU-Shreveport?), but I have lived in states where there is a college in virtually every little berg with a few thousand people in them. Of course, most of those are small private schools, not state institutions. But the point is, there are a lot more colleges in some of those states (even, I believe, per capita) than in Louisiana. I'd like to see a better-educated populace, so more opportunity means more chances that someone else will get a college education. I think that is a good thing. Now the budget issue ... that's a whole 'nother set of problems.

Fewer Universities in the state equals larger Universities equals more -same campus- students equals more dorms (a known money maker) equals more same campus curriculum opportunities with less talk of low completer courses.

As a side note the already large University of Louisiana System might even be able to have a Medical or Law school or both and who knows what else.

And yes the State would even save a little on administrative costs.

Just where will those "new" students go at UL? We already have in excess of 2,000 dorms for our 17,000 students. When are we going to wake up and get some more of those "money-making" dorms you refer to? I've been saying we need more on-campus housing since I first came to the campus in 1973. Aside from Legacy Park, I have yet to see any new ones. Plenty of old ones have been torn down, and Legacy (while an improvement in quality) doesn't come close to replacing the number of units lost.

If you eliminate some of these other universities, you also eliminate the duplication of facilities and cost of facility maintenance and those savings can be channeled into the remaining schools to grow their campuses and enrollment. All of this rediculous duplication is a waste of dollars.

Well I am in agreement with you except on the (already... 2000)dorms) that is nothing. Land is not a problem; a six block trek is doable.

Since 1973 how many dorms have been built at the new endeavors like Eunice and Alexandria? The no commute logic once used for those schools holds little water once they felt they had to build dorms. And they did and will continue to do so. However spreading the students out and about the state diminishes their educational curriculum opportunities and contributes to low completer courses state wide.

How many on average are in a dorm? How many million$ is UL outsourcing to the local community monthly in the way of rent? New money should be focused there or Acadiana should return a half mil tax to the university.

Sorry for the tangents . . . thanks for reading

I was just being facetious. (And I have no idea how many dorm rooms we actually have - I know it is pathetically small). I think it is a shame that we have so few options for living on-campus. That is causing our student population to have less and less of a connection to the main campus life. That is a symptom of a "commuter school". I have never considered UL to be a commuter school, but it has been going down that path for quite a while now. At some point, it'll have to be considered that we have transitioned into a commuter school, if we don't change our direction in regards to students living on campus. I hope we don't go there. JMO

I earned my B.A. in Philosophy from UL in 1975. Although I later earned two grad degrees in Geology/Geochemistry, I've always placed great value on my education in Philosophy. I had hoped that the Board of Regents would not vote to eliminate the degree, but I learned long ago not to expect much of substance from the bufoons who manage higher education in Louisiana.

Perhaps I'll send my B.A. diploma to Sally Clausen, with a tersely worded note to hang it next to the other trophies she has accumulated as part of her program to make a laughing stock of the State's colleges and universities.
