RCACajun's statement is, unfortunately, only the second most moronic thing I've read today. The first is from a state legislator, whose name I missed. He said, in attempting to justify cuts to higher education, that too many kids were entering college and getting a degree, only to move out of state when comensurate jobs weren't available here. If more folks could access trade and technical schools, they could be trained for the jobs we had available here. Can't make this stuff up.

This must be the first time anyone has claimed that one of our major problems is too many educated people. Disciplines like philosophy, history, etc. are what differentiate between education and training. A chicken can be trained. Only human beings can be educated. For the first time, I really wonder if this state can ever make any progress.

Do you wonder where Louisiana would be today if that logic had prevailed say 100 years ago?

I posted that in 2003 not thinking history would repeat itself. The then Governor used lack of state funds as an excuse to get students out of the classroom and into manual training.

I'm very saddened by the removal of this program. A few years ago when I was in school, I was forced to take a philosophy class for my degree. I went into it very negative thinking that it would be some boring drab that I was being forced to go through just to attain my degree. I was there for Dr Triggs first semester, and needless to say, the class and the information I got from the class floored me. My only regret is that I took the philosophy class so late in my degree plan, that I wasn't able to squeeze any more philosophy classes into my schedule.

What is moronic to one man is pure genius to another. I suspect I'm not the only one that hated philosophy. I'm just the only one brave enough to say it. They executed Socrates.

Why did the execute Socrates? Oh because he wasn't a sheep like some people were. If more people weren't sheep this country wouldn't be in the shambles it is right now.

My school of thought is that money talks and B$ walks. The concept of the soul is much older than the Greeks.

They executed Socrates for denouncing the government and spreading dangerous ideas. People have been sheep from the beginning of time. One might even suggest some posters on this board are sheep following the herd. But then again in the words of Bob Dylan "You got to serve somebody".

Dangerous ideas? Democracy was a dangerous idea at one time!

I didn't say it was a just execution then again justice is in the eyes of the beholder...AAAaaaahhhh! This is why I hated philosophy. There is no real wrong or right. BTW If memory serves Socrates was executed when there was a tyrant in power not a democracy thus democracy was a dangerous idea to those in power at that time. Wow we have accomplished a lot.

Hey I agree a lot of philosophy is empty thought, but I enjoy studying it from a historical viewpoint.

Clearly, the teaching of the immortality of the soul is much older than the Greeks and goes back at least to Babylon and perhaps farther. I was talking about the idea of the immortality of the soul specifically in Judaism and Christianity and how research I have read about lends credence to Socratic and Platonic influence.

I am just a big fan of history and think that understanding how concepts arose helps in the present.

It is also why I like to study how athletics helped UL grow by leaps and bounds from the outset and how shunning athletics has led to a stagnation of sorts in recent years.

In both instances I am intrigued by the question “What were they thinking?”

    Turbine,

I was on a business trip to New Orleans earlier this week and noticed something that affirmed my belief that, although a University's main function is to educate, there is a connection between education and athletics, and that the later can be used to enhance the former.

I was coming from Houma and was exiting on the the Poydras off ramp, and as I looked to my left, I saw the LSU Hospital. There were two large banners hanging on the outside of the building. The one to my left said football champions and had pictures of LSU football players, and the one to my right said heatlcare champions and had pictures of MRI machines, etc...

It is obvious that LSU, and other "big time" schools use their exposure for athletics to attract attention for academic purposes. This is something that we need to learn from.
