Google today offered details on the backpack it uses for creating maps of indoor locations. Dubbed Cartographer, the setup utilizes Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM)_technology to plot out the floor plan of a venue. Similar to Google’s Trekker Street View backpacks for outdoors, Cartographer requires the wearer to walk through the space. Along the way, points of interest can be inputted to an Android tablet that communicates with the backpack’s computer. With today’s announcement, Google has released six indoor maps that were created using Cartographer.
