Thread: Using Elijah Millsap to keep players at UL

  1. UL Basketball Using Elijah Millsap to keep players at UL

Whoever would have been the coach at UL (I am sure) would have used the grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence argument to keep players from transferring.

If I were Robert Lee I would do the same. If I were David Walker I would do the same. But you don’t always have current ammunition at your disposal. In this case you have the recent transfer case involving Elijah Millsap.

Here is the Elijah Millsap situation. LINK

Yikes...can't we schedule them for a home-and-home-and-home-and-home next season? That takes care of 4 non-conference and 2 home games right there...

Elijah is actually in a good situation at UAB. He is likely to be a major player on that squad next year. Note, that we actually helped Elijah find a school to transfer to. Some may say our coaches actually encouraged him to leave aas it was believed his style of play did not fit our "system". Looking back, that may have been a mistake. When the shot clock winds down in a stagnant offense, having someone athletic who can make a play is a benefit. At times Elijah could do that and few of the guys currently on the team can. Being athletic also made him a good defender. When we lost Dison this year, we had no defensive stopper.

His rebounding ability was a huge asset as well.

One of Millsaps' biggest issues was that he too often tried to force a play offensively. The guy was called for at least one charge every game.

It also didn't help that he took too many outside shots and sometimes refused to play within his role. He was better served as a No. 2 or 3 scorer who could get his points as a slasher and at the free throw line. His 40 percent shooting percentage backs that up. He seemed like a good kid, but he bickered with his teammates a lot and appeared to sometimes be a problem off the floor.

The guy was a talent but also a huge frustration to watch. He would have been a beast if he had stuck to rebounding, defending and being more of a slasher on offense instead of trying to be a shooter and the team's top offensive option.

Whoever said on this forum they only heard about APR issues when it involved UL needs to do the link.

"In other words, take chances. Isn't that partially how UAB got here?

A revolving door of players, mainly due to academic ineligibility, created an Academic Progress Rate score that cost the Blazers two scholarships last season. Davis has said he has 12 scholarships next season, which seems to indicate UAB expects to lose one scholarship when the NCAA releases its next set of APR penalties this spring."

I agree with your assessment of his skills. However, considering we only won 10 games this year, I still say having an athlete of his ability may have helped us.

I believe that Millsap could have helped - if he played his role.

In my opinion, UL missed three big pieces in 2008-09:

1.) A consistent inside presence. (Barr was in and out of the lineup. Adeife and Batiste were not offensive threats. Wallace was hurt but didn't get consistent playing time.)

2.) A consistent point guard. (McCoy was up and down. Lago struggled all season. Daigle is not a PG.)

3.) An offensive talent who could scores on drives to the basket and get to the free throw line. (No such players to be seen, although Roberson was once such a player.)

You forgot a coach that actually could coach.
