Here is what is in their Game Notes. Notice how they specifically mention the required state tag.
They will not call us by our preferred athletic reference. I'll bet we bend over and use their preferred reference.
WHAT’S IN A NAME?
As Louisiana Tech and Louisiana-Lafayette prepare for the 86th installment of the long-time in-state series, we can look back at how time has often changed the nomenclature of the battle. When the two teams first met in 1910, Louisiana-Lafayette was then known as the Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute while Louisiana Tech was known as the Louisiana Industrial Institute. Tech became the Louisiana Polytechnic Institute in 1921 but was often referred to as Louisiana Tech and officially became Louisiana Tech University in 1970. Meanwhile SLII was renamed the Southwestern Louisiana Institute of Liberal and Teaching Learning in 1921 then was renamed the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1960. In 1995, the state legislature approved the school’s name change to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette with Act 45, which required that at least two state universities change their name at the same
time. It required that all universities who change their name change it to “University of Louisiana at [city designation].”
I can't believe they actually put this in their game notes. Sad.
