Thread: MRI?

    UL Baseball MRI?

I was listening to the baseball game yesterday and I thought I heard Jay mention something about an MRI while Les Smith was batting. Perhaps on his shoulder? Something to the effect of "they are afraid of what they might find" Did i hear this correctly? Was he talking about Les or someone else? It seems like if he was hurt that bad he would'nt have been playing. Someone please tell me I misunderstood this....

Yes u heard correctly...they took an xray saturday(i think) and les is suppose to have an MRI today. They are afraid it is a torn labrium. This affects his throwing motion, so he didnt play in the field on Sat or Sun. He can still swing the bat with the injury. Hopefully we can get Goulas back in the field sonner than later, to give us another outfielder.Kind of running a little thin without Bowman, Smith and Goulas.

Parrot reported this morning that Les has a SLAP tear, but they think he can rehab and have surgery during the summer. He shouldn't be out long.

That would still mean he would be limited to DH unfortunately.

He should still be able to play the outfield....unless it is really serious, you are only asking him to throw the ball maybe twice a game...the rest of the time he will be tossing back to the infield. If he was a pitcher it would be a different story, but surely he will be able to play through it.

The news is not all that great. A SLAP tear is a major surgery. He will be slinged for 1-2 months and throwing at 8 months. This usuall takes a full year to fully recover. I would be surprised to see him throwing in fall ball but should be ready by the start of next season.

It all depends on the severity but this is just something quick from wiki:

    Surgical recovery
Stage one – For the first four weeks the arm is typically kept in a sling. Some surgeons only have the patient in a sling for a week. Patients may find themselves in an immobilizer sling, which adds a waist support to prevent movement. Needless to say, the first stage of recovery is about not stressing the repair site. This is the initial healing phase of the recovery.

Stage two – Initial physical therapy. The goal here is to increase range of motion. Load bearing through the joint should be avoided to allow the repair to complete.

Stage three – Increased range of motion and initial strength training. At this point, about eight to ten weeks out, the repair should be complete but not ready for full loading yet. Return to day-to-day activities, but not strenuous activity.

Stage four – completion. At about six months out the repair should be strong enough for a return to full activity.

Note that this timeline will vary according to surgeon preferences and the extent of damage.

Yea, I'm not too sure how much ''throwing'' he will be doing the rest of the season. I'd bet he is a team player, but as a freshman he may have too much to lose as far as permanent damage being done to his arm.

Yea, and judging by the way he reacted, I don't think it's an extreme injury. I think we would see alot more concern from the staff, JP, and Les himself. Not to mention, we're due for a BREAK when it comes to injuries. sheesh.

So 6 months from the day of his surgery, let's say June 1st, he can begin to throw again. December 1st...
