Hawk played some good first base this weekend. He did have an error, but was strong for the majority of the series.

Peak? Its about time to play up to the peak, if we want to have any chance in getting an at large.

Having Hawk at DH could possible do two things. Defensively, I think Whipple would be better at 1st than Hawkins. Also maybe moving him back to DH will get him into a grove. I am by no means saying that he isn't doing well, he is hitting over .300 with 6 homers but we have seen more out of him in the past. He is not driving the ball in the gaps as much as he has in previous years.

I agree that he could be hitting better. But you have to remember what kind of hitters were hitting before and after him in the lineup. Case in point, since Goulas has been back and Les has caught fire, Hawkins is getting better pitches to hit, and in the past week, though he hasn't gone yard, he's been hitting the ball more consistently. Also, Whipple has got to be in the OF. His arm strikes fear into base runners, and he leads the team with assists. He plays a damn good left field.

IMO putting Hawk at DH would make the most sense defensively. Goulas, Olasin, and Smith in the outfield would be pretty solid, and I think Whip is an upgrade at first. Whip has had alot assist from the outfield but I think he is a bigger upgrade at first than what we would lose in the outfield (if anything with Goulas).

This is probably all a mute point now since Les should probably DH now. We cannot risk hurting this guy's future we have him for 3 more years.

Bill, ask if they have the MRI results on Les Smith yet. Regardless of this, ask if they will continue to DH him until his arm is better. If so, who will play in the outfield when Fuselier pitches. If Goulas can't throw and Smith can't throw on those days, they may be in a bind.

    I agree....

I would love to see Hawk back at DH and focusing on crushing the ball again. Our outfield would be extremely potent with Goulas, Olasin, and Smith (if all are healthy) and putting Whip @ 1st would definitely be an upgrade.

If in fact it takes Goulas a couple of more weeks to get his arm where he needs and Smith is in fact out as far as playing the field....we still have Fuse when he's not pitching to play the O.F. Man it's nice to have depth, or should I say YOUNG depth!!

Geaux Cajuns! I've got a good feeling that we reel off a couple more wins in a row and ride this high horse into ULM and poise ourselve for another big series...

You have a nice outlook, but most of these things are not certainties. Goulas' arm is not there yet. Smith is a no-go for outfield. Fussilier is going to pitch a lot.
Facts are, Whip has more range than Matt does; what will we do when Alex is pitching?; continue to juggle line-ups and defensive positions isn't smart, any coach will tell you that. Scott makes the most sense at first right now. His defense has improved, which is great news, and he won't be moved.

Due to our lackluster beginning of the season, we are forced to win every series for the rest of the year to even have a shot at a at-large bid. I think when it comes down to it, we will need to win the tourney.

Only way we get an at-large is:

Win 75-80% of remaining conference games. Beat LSU again, beat Tulane, beat Rice. Take 2 of 3 at remaing non conference weekend series.

So basically we need to win the tournament.
