BATON ROUGE — Former UL Lafayette golf standout Richard Ainley came within one hole of making it two straight titles on the Tight Lies Tour here Sunday.
Ainley, who took his first-ever U.S. tournament win as a professional last weekend in the Sprint PCS Open in Hattiesburg, Miss., wound up one stroke out of the title chase Sunday in the Audubon Imports Open at The University Club.
John Kimbell and Rich Morris tied for the top spot at 17-under 271, with Kimbell winning the $20,000 first-place in a playoff. Ainley was tied with Bill Montgomery for second, one shot back at 16-under 272.
Ainley, who posted back-to-back six-under 66 rounds on Thursday and Friday before an even-par 72 Saturday, tied for the third-lowest round in the field with a four-under 68 Sunday and almost made up a five-stroke deficit to Morris in the final round.
