You can talk this until you are blue in the face. It will never get any better than the Cajun Chicken with a live bulldog. That is a FACT.

The antics of the Cajun Chicken were great, BUT it had no connection to UL. It was not a mascot, we are not the UL Chickens, and it made no sense. My point is to develop a mascot that has a connection to the university like the CatahoULa (state dog) or the Bull Gator or the Pelican (state bird), have a live mascot and a costume mascot. We could recall the Cajun Chicken to revive his antics in a new mascot costume. The point is, no matter how entertaining he was, the Cajun Chicken had no relevance or connection to UL. We need to further develop our identity and the Cajun Chicken did nothing and does nothing to help us in that regard.

I understand what you are saying, but I think we have plenty of ties to the state of Louisiana already. The Chicken was unique, recognizable, and memorable in a good way. There's a reason why the Phillies mascot is one of the most popular in the MLB, and it's not because he reminds people of Philadelphia.

one....i like the idea of a simple logo...the interlocking UL and thats it. white with black trim and shadow on a red background....that should be whats on ESPN next to our name when we get the chance to be on TV, too much going on in the hotwheels logo, especially when its a small monicker in the corner of the screen. So no extra FDL's or anything, just UL

two...the mascot is there to get fans involved in the game and the experience. the pepper fails, the chicken was great at that (a la red white chants). your mascot does not need ties to the organization, much like the phillies MASCOT, its that goofy looking thing that doesnt portay philadelphia at all, but he has fun and gets the fans involved, and creates excitement.

    thats my piece/peace

Could someone find and post the picture of the red Bull Gator from a previous thread? _
Catahoula is great but there is a huge education curve involved, it hasn't been the State dog for very long. I do like the idea of a dog to fetch the Tee, but all Catahoulas look different so the learning curve is even greater.

    Masots should be easy.

<< The King of the stock dog breeds, most enduring... stamina is their middle name... CATAHOULAS outwork and outfight all other breeds of stock dogs when protecting their master, livestock, and property. They are the largest and most aggressive of the cattle dogs, bred to handle wild cattle and hogs in the roughest, most remote country. Catahoulas will also hunt coon, bear, or whatever else they are introduced to.

Catahoulas are bred to go and find livestock in swamps, hilly canyons, thickets or forests, or mountains. >>

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catahoula_Leopard_Dog

<< Catahoulas are highly intelligent, energetic, have a high pain tolerance and are very quick, yet they are also very loving and gentle with children they know or have adopted, and their family (pack). They are extremely versatile and have been used in search and rescue, hunting, herding and agility. This breed is also renowned for their ability to tree raccoons, many Catahoulas can actually climb trees, aided by their long, hard, sharp nails which help them grip the bark. >>

    THIS DOG IS FREAKIN' SUPERMAN

<< One theory as to the origins of the breed states that the Catahoula is thought to have descended from "war dogs" (Mastiffs and Greyhounds) brought to Louisiana by Hernando de Soto in the 16th century. In the 1800s, French settlers arrived in Louisiana with their Beauceron. They told of strange looking dogs with haunting glass eyes that were used by the Indians to hunt game in the swamp.[13] It is thought the Beauceron and Red Wolf/war dog were interbred to produce the Catahoula. >>

<< Jim Bowie and brother Rezin Bowie, who spent much of their youth in Catahoula Parish are reported to have owned a pair of Catahoulas. It was said that they would sleep with a Catahoula at their feet.[14][15] During the early 1900s, Teddy Roosevelt used the Catahoula when hunting. Louisiana Governor Earl K. Long had an interest in the breed and collected them.[15]
In 1979, Governor Edwin Edwards signed a bill making the Catahoula the official state dog of Louisiana in recognition of their importance in the history of the region. >>

Now, I defy anyone to come up with a better mascot for THE UNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA.

Yeah, but that is pro baseball. Go to Texas and instead of Bevo put in the Chicken and see what happens. Go to LSU and instead of the Tiger, try the Chicken. The same at Tennessee with Smokey, etc. etc. This is college and we try to run our games like a pro game. That is a major reason our game atmosphere sucks. We play piped in rap music, don't utilize the band (who doesn't know what to do or play anyway) and don't have a college related mascot. It is time to correct all of this cr*p.

ULtimate.....I'm pretty sure you should be hired by the athletic dept. These logos / crest you are coming out with are extremely good. Great job pal!

As for the mascot....I love the catahoula idea. It was really cool when we ran the bulldog out on the field before football games. At the same time I love the bullgator even more! It would be cool because we actually have live gators on campus and I think it would promote the campus swamp.

Thanks, but after the email barrage I sent two weeks ago, I don't think they would take me. lol

I'm kind of split on the Houla and the Gator. I like the idea of having one of those beautiful Catahoula's on the sidelines but a dog can only do so much as far as crowd interaction. I like the gator because that is more of a "mascot" suit type mascot but the national view IMO will be that we are posing Florida Gators. That's why I like the Catahoula.
