Thread: Not diggin the "pepper" mascot

It's just so simple and clean that makes it very hard to not like. You see something like this IMO the majority of people will accept because of the fact that it is simple, traditional, and classy. Maybe even put a 1900 under the ragin cajuns. I don't know. When you start throwing flames and peppers on logo's you are going to have people that like it, sure. But the majority will not. And if i'm running the marketing, I'm going to go with the logo that 80% of the people like as oppose to the logo that 20% like because it's considered "different". But that is just me.

Yeah the freakin' "fightin peppers" is catchy. Why not just do away ragin cajuns while we are at it! So we can really make the university mascot look dumb!

In contrast the pepper is death to my eyes. Bring back the Cajun man. I remember when the university had to get rid of him because he resembled a plantation owner or a rough rider. This is why I never vote for anyone named cravins. They did the same thing to Teurlings with their mascot. Mascot's do not oppress people, people do!! _
I understand you were just a young'un back then, but I can tell you that I and all my friends back then thought the "Cajun" Man looked like a cross between Colonel Sanders and some ridiculous cartoon character. In other words, we didn't like THAT mascot, either!!! You obviously missed the BEST mascot there ever was: THE FABULOUS CAJUN CHICKEN!!!

The other important thing is we are only dealing with red as an extra color. That makes a huge difference in printing costs and in the cost of manufacturing gear and clothing. And, of course, it is clean, simple, and classic looking.

The Chicken was a fun character to watch, but in no way was a mascot. It has absolutely NO RELATIONSHIP to the university. We are not the UL Chickens. Now, if we had a Bull Gator, for example as a mascot, having the person who performed the Fabulous Cajun Chicken do the same act in that mascot uniform would be priceless. In addition to our moniker, Ragin Cajuns, and the Fleur de Lis, our university symbol, we still need a mascot. The pepper is out and, if used, should be used only as the accent on Ragin'. The red Bull Gator, named Fideaux, from a previous thread was outstanding (could someone post that again). It works in a uniform and we could build a sanctuary around the stadium for it. Also, the State dog, the CatahoULa is another excellent mascot. Both, either, have ties to the university. We have a swamp on campus with a Bull Gator in it. We are also The University of Louisiana, so adopting the State Dog as our mascot also is valid.

I wish the university would put together a committee to address all of this and make a final selection. We don't need to pay an outside advertising firm $40,000 to redesign our logo or come up with a mascot. We have it all right here and we have the right people on this Board to sit on the committee.

Logo aside, 'MudBugs' is a clueless name.

The only thing a pepper should be used on is food. Not on a word, a logo, a helmet, a basketball floor, the left sleeve of a baseball jersey, etc.

Secondly, I would have a much smaller problem with the pepper if it and it's associated flames weren't crapped all over every piece of merchandise I want to buy. The problem with this is that some idiot thought that a "Mascot" and a "Logo" had to be interchangable, which is not the case. The Houston Rockets don't have a person dressed as a rocket at their games, they have a large bear named Clutch, which is only seen at games and promotional/charity events. It is in no way included in any merchandise, logo's, etc because it has no relation to the Rockets or to Houston, just as a/the pepper has no relation to this school or this culture.

The object that you want to be your mascot, should not even be a thought when determining your identity, except of course, if the school's nickname is an animal or some other easily defined object (i.e. Rockets, Spurs, Pistons, etc).

As for those logo's...I know where ya'll are coming from by saying that they're simple, but I disagree. Simple would be just the FDL, or just LOUISIANA, or one of those object with the State behind it, i.e. the UT Longhorn or the Michigan M. I think what ya'll are constructing looks good (although I prefer the FDL seen on the School's website), but would be used more as a T-shirt design or a helmet design, which is how this discussion started. I say that because when I think of a logo, I think of the small "icon" that would appear next to one of our player's names if they're featured on ESPN.

Perhaps that icon would be a Fleur de Lis with an interlocking UL in the middle. Can someone come up with that design?

    This thread makes me smile.

You guys keep up the good work. If we never give up, we can't fail. We will bring back sanity and respectability to our uniforms!

I think a long pronounced snout (jaw) is crucial for the success of any sideline character.

If the head is round it is dead. The person inside should know that simply by changing their direction they are creating animation.

    The BullGator qualifies.
