UL - For the seventh straight season the Ragin’ Cajuns and Demons meet for a home-and-home mid-week series.
Louisiana has the most recent success, winning three of the four meetings held last season. The teams have met on a regular basis since UL joined Division I in 1972 with 1974-76, 1983, 1985 and 2000-02 being the exceptions. After a three-year hiatus from 2000-02, the Ragin’ Cajuns have won 11 of the 19 meetings held since the series resumed in 2003. Louisiana holds a 17-14 edge in the Robichaux Era (12-6 at “The Tigue”). The Cajuns have won the past three meetings held at “Tigue” Moore Field and are 23-17 vs. NSU at the facility. In the last five seasons there have been seven one-run contests, with three of them occurring last season. Tonight’s meeting will be the 119th all-time between UL and NSU – the third-most games played against a Louisiana school.
• SEASON TICKET REDEMPTION NIGHT: The Ragin’ Cajuns host their first season ticket redemption night at “The Tigue” against Northwestern State Wednesday night. Unused season tickets from home games 1-13 (including the FAU rainout) may be redeemed for additional tickets at no charge on a first-come, first-served basis.
• SCOUTING THE DEMONS: The Demons started strong in 2009, compiling a 10-5 record (4-1 Southland) through the first four weeks of the season. NSU then suffered through a five-game losing streak to fall back to .500. The Demons picked up a series victory at Sam Houston State last weekend to climb back above .500 at 12-11 (6-5 Southland). NSU and Sun Belt member ULM were rained out Tuesday night. NSU carries a 2-4 mark in mid-week games heading into Wednesday’s game. The Demons split a mid-week series with Tulane and carried a 1-all tie with No. 5 LSU into the ninth. This is the second season under head coach J.P. Davis (went 28-28 last season). Davis took over the program after Mitch Gaspard left for an assistant job at Alabama following the 2007 season. NSU is loaded with upperclassmen with a total of 25 on the roster (16 juniors, 9 seniors). The Demons brought in 13 transfers last offseason. Chase Lyles is the team’s top hitter with a .368 average, nine home runs and 23 RBI and an .805 slugging percentage. He along with Justin O’Neal (.340, 3 HR, 17 RBI) and Trent Grondin (.320, 1 HR, 7 RBI) have already posted 30-plus base hits. Jimmy Heard, a weekend starter, paces the pitching staff with a 4-1 record and 3.43 ERA. Nine other pitchers have an ERA 4.82 or above. NSU’s pitching staff sports a 6.01 ERA and it’s been a different starting pitcher each mid-week game.
