Thread: McGuire injury may give Masson late opportunity

  1. UL Football McGuire injury may give Masson late opportunity

If UL's football season started today, head coach Rickey Bustle would likely start last year's back-up quarterback Brad McGuire under center.

The sophomore, who helped engineer a comeback win over Arkansas State last fall in relief of an injured Michael Desormeaux, has been solid during spring practice but is hardly running away with the job. Sophomore Chris Masson and redshirt freshman Blaine Gautier are also fighting for playing time, along with redshirt freshmen Keldric White and Brady Thomas.

"McGuire sat out Monday's practice with a sports hernia, which occurs when there is a weakening of the muscles or tendons in the lower abdominal wall."

Of all things. The 2008-2009 Cajun athletes' injury curse continues.

In honor of the spring game I just had to play a little "Are you my brother?" How about Dr. Authement and Joe Torre?

Yea, it's going to be tough for him to get the starting job anytime soon if this is how they view him

"Blaine hasn't grasped everything yet," Bustle said. "But he's shown the ability to make some plays and makes some good throws. He has a lot of learning to do, but he's just a freshman."
My thing is, he is a Freshman, the other 2 are Sophmores. If you go with one of the Sophs, do they hold the job for 3 years or would we make a change between now and then. It seems pretty obvious to me that Blaine has the most upside of any of our QB's. It also sounds like there's some small things about his passing game and decision making or maybe his grasp of the offense that is missing right now.

This is not a big deal. We run a spread offense that exposes our QB's to a lot of hits. I have a strong feeling all three guys will play meaningful minutes this season. What they do when they are in the game will determine who the long-term starter is.

Blaine struggles with touch passes, like dump off's and screen passes. Also a college playbook is very complicated for the skill position guys and especially for the QB. You could be a genius and it will take you a long time to grasp everything. He must learn every play to the letter, all the check downs and audibles against a zone and man defense, down and distance. It is a lot more difficult than 99% of people think.

Under Stokley my playbook just for the WR had over 150 different plays with numerous check downs and audibles for man/zone reads. It takes a long time to learn all of those plays.

We will see a 2 QB system IMO after the 2009 season.

I don't know if I'd agree with that. You usually see a 2 QB rotation when each gives you a certain skill set that the other does not. One has speed and the other can throw. You rotate downs or play one or the other in a certain situation. However, none of these QB's have something that the others don't. They can all run a little. They can all throw. I think that Gautier can however, throw better on the run and use these skills to buy time and get guys open more. He has a very strong arm and is no Michael Vick on the ground but he can move when he needs to. I just think he makes more plays and I do predict him being the starter at some point this year but I also know feel that McGuire or Masson for that matter are very capable of getting it done.

Brad has been playing hard even with this "sports Hernia" thing going on since last year. It really hurts his mobility and quickness but he has shown some real gutsd hanging in there. After spring is over we are going to get him fixed which can only help in his speed quickness and performance. The recovery time from surgery for this type injury is quick. He should be able to start working within 2 weeks of surgery and back at it full speed within 4 weeks. With that in mind it will be fun to see how it all plays out in the fall.
Whomever gets the nod I say---GEAUX CAJUNS.
