  1. UL Basketball Walker: Academic success is focus for basketball program

David Walker considers himself a numbers guy, but even UL's athletic director sometimes struggles to fully comprehend the NCAA's Academic Progress Rate.

The APR is an academic reform package created to measure how well schools retain student-athletes, keep them academically eligible and eventually graduate them on a scale of 1 to 1,000.

"I compare it to the IRS tax code," Walker said. "What makes the APR so complicated to understand is that it's an ever-evolving program."

"Academic success" and APR are what one would call 'a given' they are like waking up in the morning and breathing.

You should never be rewared for performing 'a given' but you will be punished for not doing so.

David Walker is rewarding his coaches for performing 'a given.'

So, if our teams go 0-fer the season, but they all graduate, then that is a "successful" season???? Outstanding. Why don't we just forget about offering athletic scholarships, start over, and tell everyone with a 3.0 or higher GPA that they can try out for the school's athletic teams. Just think of all the money UL will save!!! Too bad no one ever thought of this before. It's genius!
