Thread: UL students envision elevated railway system

  1. Louisiana Campus UL students envision elevated railway system

UL - At first glance, the conceptual design for a new rail transit system in Lafayette might bring to mind the futuristic television cartoon “The Jetsons.”

The vision of commuters zipping around in driverless pods above city streets takes a while to set in, especially in a state not known for innovations in public transportation.

But a group of industrial design students at the University of Louisiana have developed the rudiments of an automated, elevated railway system that they hope will be the future of mass transit in the city.

now, that there would make me want to take the bus to work! if jindal got a hold of this idea, he may forego the stimulus money he wants to build the fast train from br to no(an idea which he ridiculed when it was proposed elsewhere. go figure.)

    Thats really cool.

Take a look at a proposal I'm developing for an English class I'm taking. It address problems I've found with UL and Lafayette.

Firstly, that our main city park, Girard, is too small for the ever growing population of Lafayette. Girard was built when the population of Lafayette was maybe a fourth its size now, and can't accommodate the population now, it's always very crowded.

Secondly, UL has only about 137 acres on its main campus, much smaller than other comparable schools. (Southeastern has a comparable student and faculty body to us, and has 365 acres, almost 3 times the space, on their main campus!) We have very cramped buildings, and this addresses what we could do in order to gain more land on the main campus.

Thirdly, the horse farm is in the middle of Lafayette being un-utilized. The public sentiment in Lafayette is that the horse farm should stay a green space, and this address what we could do with it to keep it green.

If you have Facebook, please join and let me know what you think, what the problems are, anything so I can develop this thing into a good proposal and make a good grade in my English class. If you don't have FB, let me know on here, either in this post, or you can pm me on here or email me with anything you'd want to share, my email is jpc1972@louisiana.edu. Thank you!!

    Great ideas.

Just looking at it on face value, swapping the 2 land areas makes a lot of sense. You're right in that the city needs a a much bigger city park, and the university needs much more land adjacent to campus. Everyone involved would benefit.

    The problems are political.

Aside from the park land which UL doesn't own, there is another area of land that the university actually owns that it is not utilizing to get maximum usage.

The area of land from the frats all the way to Blackham and the Horticulture Center should be cleared for a massive housing complex complete with cafe's, stores, and enough aprtment-style housing to fufill all of the Univerity's needs.

This would also be a bridge from the Athletic campus to the Academic campus and become ground zero for Student life on campus.

While the park/land swap seems very expedient and neat, it is doomed from politics.

Alternatively, my idea could begin tommorrow as UL already owns the land.

Please put this idea in your proposal, and I wish you the best of luck.

That's a great idea, however the School of Architecture's Community Design Workshop has already thought of, and designed a proposal for what to do with it. Check it out here: http://cdw.louisiana.edu/university-common/index.shtml

The great thing about the transit system proposed, is that it would be the thing to connect all of these things together.

Good idea. However, I remember this being discussed before and the big issue is the way the property was deeded. Apparently the property was deeded to the city with the understanding that it be used as a public park. If at any point it were to stop being used for that purpose the property would revert back to the original owners or their heirs.

So the point being is that there is a third party involvement here that is very significant to actually making this happen.

Hmmm... methinks that new halls would need names. We already have two Mouton halls, I think we could fit in a New Girard Hall, and/or even a Girard Quadrangle!

    BTW...

This story, like the Crawler, is starting to appear elsewhere on the web. Check ultoday.

For those of you who wish to curse the MA, consider: I've been pitching a monorail for UL for almost 30 years. Jerry Malinowski and his kids have been working on this variation for at least eight years. The city planners have been looking at it for a long time, the Mayor-President is very interested, as is T-Joe.

So why did this story break out of Baton Rouge? Where has our local media been for all of that time?

Marsha Sills would have picked up the story if The Advertiser thought she was still worth her salt.
