The Ragin’ Cajuns held a one-hour and forty-five minute practice on Friday, their tenth of the spring, in preparation for the second scrimmage in March. The team will scrimmage on Saturday at 10am in Cajun Field.
Friday’s work was much lighter on both sides of the ball to make sure the players were ready for Saturday’s action. The Cajuns expect to see over 100 plays during the scrimmage.
“I thought we had a good practice today,” defensive backs coach Hurlie Brown stated. “Defensively, we added another third down package and the guys were trying to make sure they got it right.
“Practice wasn’t as fast as what it should be, but today was a learning day.”
The coaches will use Saturday’s scrimmage to continue the evaluation process. Seventeen players are not expected to compete in the scrimmage because of injury, although several of those have been out the entire spring.
The loss of players in the spring ultimately creates more playing time for other personnel and leads to better experience and depth.
“The injuries affect those players timing on the field, but they have been learning all spring,” Brown explained. “We have to play with the players we have healthy, no matter when the other guys come back, so other players need to be ready to play.”
The scrimmage will be scripted in certain series, while other possessions will be allowed to run their course. The script calls for several red zone and goal line scenarios.
“We are looking for those (in the scrimmage) who can be as close to technically perfect as possible,” Brown said. “The evaluation comes down to who we think will be able to play week in and week out at a high level.”
“This deep into the spring, we should be seeing guys playing up to their potential.
“You don’t expect perfection, but we want to see who can grasp it, retain it and then transfer it out onto the field. The scrimmage is a perfect way to see who can process 10 days of practice in a game-like situation.”
Following Saturday’s scrimmage, the team will have just three practices remaining before concluding with the Spring Game on Saturday, April 4 at noon.
