The Ragin' Cajuns practiced on Friday for just over 90 minutes in preparation for Saturday’s scrimmage at Cajun Field.
The team worked out with their shoulder pads on during Friday’s practice, a change from the previously scheduled no-contact day. The team will have a no contact practice without pads at some point later this spring, likely the day before the spring game.
“I felt like we needed to come out today and work on some things in pads,” head coach Rickey Bustle said.
“We wanted to get back to fundamentals (today). We took a look at Wednesday’s practice where we had live team work and did some teaching from it.”
The shorter practice was designed to prepare the players for a 125-play scrimmage, their first of three this spring.
“Hopefully it will lead to better execution (in Saturday’s scrimmage).
“It’s going to be our first scrimmage with guys getting a lot of snaps and you want to see execution on both sides of the ball.”
Bustle stayed true to his philosophy of never discussing individual plays or specific players during practice.
“I’m interested in watching all the position battles,” Bustle added. “Our goal has been to get better every practice as a team and everyone is working hard to achieve that goal.”
Saturday’s scrimmage at Cajun Field is scheduled to begin 10:05am. The first half of the scrimmage will be scripted to allow exactly seven plays in each series. The first and second teams will get approximately 35 plays in the opening half.
The second half will be limited to around 15 plays for each team, but the series will not be scripted to allow for a game-like flow.
