Thread: UL's focus in spring football: Unfinished business

  1. UL Football UL's focus in spring football: Unfinished business

Most teams begin spring football drills having dealt with some sort of closure.

Whether it's looking to build on the momentum of a winning season or looking to rebound from a loss, teams have a starting point.

But not the Ragin' Cajuns. UL began spring drills on Wednesday feeling a little empty.

"That's the thing, we left doubt last year. We were kind of on that bubble. We were bowl eligible and we didn't get that opportunity," UL coach Rickey Bustle said. "And that was our fault, so our thing is let's get better and don't leave any doubt."

"While the quarterback situation is key to UL's success, there's no doubt the toughest thing will be replacing the Sun Belt record holder for career yards in Fenroy."

It's not possible to replace Fenroy but fortunately we are deep and can run the ball by committee if need be.

The toughest thing in my opinion has been and still is -

putting a defense on the field over an entire season that can shut people down so we do not have to outscore 'em to win games.

I checked the rulebook, we are pretty much stuck with the outscore 'em to win games thing...

But I do agree, the D is the Key!

    Did anyone watch practice yesterday?

    How did they look?

I can't put my finger on it, but I think our defense is going to be solid this coming year... the best Bustle's had... and we have to believe we will not get bit two years in a row by an epidemic injury bug. The bug hurt us bad last year... but it gave us an opportunity to spread a lot of playing time around... and that is a huge benefit for an upcoming season.

The first two games at home, in front of (very likely) some monster crowds is going to be a blast. It will also allow our new offensive skill stars to get their Saturday wheels and hands operating in front of a home advantage fanbase.

If I were a coach I would definitely be using the "unfinished business" theme right out the gate this year. We have to take the bowl berth out of other people's hands.

As a group, this will be the best front 7 Bustle's had. All those talented, young guys got invaluable experience last season. They will lead this defense to respectability this season.
