Where to eat in Baton Rouge

Went to The Chimes... Hard to pass up the beer selection...


First pitcher was Barney (Andy Gator and Purple Haze mixed)

The rest was all by recommendation from our waitress. We had Fried Alligator, Onion Rings, Stuffed Mushrooms and Stuffed Jalapenos.. then each polished off a burger.

Got wet at the game... but good times.


I will be attending the LSU/UL football game but I will be tailgating so no need to eat somewhere before...

There is an older thread on this subject titled "Where to eat in Baton Rouge"... I listed the following in that thread, but there are some opinions given by others you may want to consider. My recommendations are for the decent food and atmosphere, and not very expensive spots. Louisiana Lagniappe on Perkins just off Bluebonnet (across from Perkins Rowe) is a decent Louisiana cuisine restaurant for evening dining. I hope this helps.

TJ Ribs off I-10 at Acadian (good ribs, good brisket - totally LSU atmosphere)
Izzo's burritos - I like them if you want a azz load of cheap mexican food
George's or Ivar's under I-10 are not bad po-boy/sandwich spots
Chimes at the gates of LSU - good food and tremendous beer choices
Walk-ons - I just do not like their food, but it is close to the ballgame
Past-time - near the riverboat casinos and a few miles from Alex Box - run down pizza joint - some people love their pizza - I do not
Mellow Mushroom is pretty good pizza
Parrains on Perkins (not too far from George's and Ivar's) is about as close to good Cajun seafood as is available in BR.
Superior Grill - Government Street - Pretty good fajitas... don't like a lot of other menu selections.
There are some other good eateries (Italian, etc) but they are not pre and post ballgame joints.
My recommendation would go to Chimes (food variety and beer), Parrains (seafood), George's (po-boy), Voodoo (barbeque), and Izzo's (big fat tasty made to order burrito).

I'll counter you on the Pastime. It's a classic "'joint" as is Fleur De Lis.

Gino's and Pinetta's have been around since the mid 1960's at least. Brewbachers makes good po' boys. Couyon's is the best bbq spot in BR.

You know nothing in Louisiana outside of a 10 mile radius of Lafayette is worth a crap and the only good thing bout Louisiana, other than Lafayette of course, is that it's close to Texas.

Having said that, the Pastime is a "classic pizza/beer joint" and the roast beef poor-boy is not too bad either if pizza is not your thing.

Gino's has the best lasagna in town. imo

You can get a pretty good filet at the, here we go, Texas Roadhouse and even better for some...it's called the "Dallas filet".

Some of the best food and I include all of South La, can be found right up the road from Tiger Stadium at Roberto's in St. Gabriel. Their hours don't work for just a game day trip, 5-10 on Sat, but I highly recommend the food. Don't be fooled by the outside or the inside for that matter, you are paying for the food and in that you will not be disappointed.

I've eaten at Pastime and Fleur De Lis a good bit... I just don't know about steering an out of towner to either. I do like Gino's... because I love their marinara sauce and their great atmosphere for me and my lady. I've never been to Byronz or Couyon's. I will have to try them out.

Baton Rouge has such a huge selection of eateries... when people are looking for recommendations... they have to be specific in what they want. If you come to south Louisiana and you are looking for something unique to south Louisiana... 1 in 30 places in Lafayette is unique and 1 in 300 in Baton Rouge are unique, nowadays.

I'm not here to kid anyone about where BR stands on the food list compared to NO and Lafayette. LOL! However, places like Pastime and Fleur are unique and worth a visit for the food and the atmosphere. The Pastime is also close to the field house (or whatever they call it) where I believe LState likely plays volleyball too.

Others can decide about whether Judice Inn has the best burger but it is an institution that people ought to experience. I'll say the same about Don's Seafood and Dwyer's downtown and Alessi's on Johnston. Wonderful places IMHO.

The only thing I can recommend at Byronz is the post roast, mashed potatoes and veggie as it's the only thing I've had there. But, it was good.

don't forget the spin-off of the original don's downtown, and that is don's hut on johnston st. it's not as much of a fixture as the original, after all it's only been open for about 35 years or so, but it's better and more consistent than the original. i like them both; i just prefer the hut. you also have to hit alesi's for the only truly mama-mia italian food in the city. get the pizza, or try the authentic tufoli. the tufoli tastes as if mr. mike's(alesi) mother had been cooking the sauce all day. wherever, enjoy!
