UL - Louisiana’s Lady Cajuns Tennis continued its new found winning ways Sunday afternoon when they beat Arkansas State 4-3. The Lady Cajuns jumped out to an early lead taking the doubles’ point.
Winning 8-5 on court one was UL’s Julie Mazinova and Mia Gordon over ASU’s * Herring and Tina Ojdanic.
The Lady Cajuns Angela Dangond and Milou Isreal defeated Red Wolves Paula Chelminska and Elne’ Barnard 8-4. UL’s Marina Ruiz de Gauna and Tara Vasovic lost to ASU’s Rone’ van Wyk and Leydi Zora 9-8 (7-5).
Arkansas State tied the game 1-1 when their Menna Kamal beat UL’s Vasovic 7-5, 6-3.
With Gordon’s loss to ASU's Barnard 7-6, 6-4, ASU took the lead 2-1.
Even after being visibly frustrated with her opponent, Mazinova was able to get a win over ASU’s Chelminska 7-5, 6-3. This left the match tied 2-2.
UL’s Ruiz de Gauna defeated ASU’s Zora 6-1, 3-6, 6-2, allowing the Cajuns to take the lead 3-2.
UL’s Israel lost her first set against van Wyk 2-6, but came back to win the next two sets 7-5, 6-2. With her win, UL won the match against the Arkansas State Red Wolves. Israel was down 5-2 in the second set before coming all the way back.
ASU’s * Herring defeated UL’s Dangond 6-2 in the first set. Dangond came back in the second set, beating Herring 6-2. The third set was very close, but Herring defeated Dangond 7-6 with a tie-breaker score of 7-5.
Head coach Tina Samara was happy to pull out the win saying, “I am glad that we were on the right side of a 4-3 match this time, it’s nice to know that we can even if we don’t play the crispest tennis. Our girls are fighting hard and battling.”
The Cajuns will hope to continue their winning streak as they welcome Illinois State, Monday at 2:00 P.M.
