Louisiana's Ragin’ Cajuns tennis team won their first home match Saturday against the UALR Trojans 6-1.
The Cajuns won all three doubles matches. Louisiana’s Julie Mazinova and Mia Gordon defeated UALR’s Marta Gomez-Jordana and Chantal Coolen 8-2.
The Cajuns Angela Dangond and Milou Israel beat Trojans Anne Weijenborg and Rebecca Van Den Houte 8-3. UL’s Marina Ruiz de Gauna and Tara Vasovic defeated UALR’s Fanny Lopez and Nathalia Garay 8-4.
With these wins, the Cajuns entered the singles matches with a 1-0 lead. Three Cajuns had their first home win during the match.
Mia Gordon, with her first home win of the season, defeated Rebecca Van Den Houte 6-1, 4-1, after her opponent retired. This win gave the Cajuns a 2-0 lead.
Cajun Marina Ruiz de Gauna had her first win of the season beating the Trojans Fanny Lopez 6-1, 6-2, which gave Lousiana a 3-0 lead.
With Julie Mazinova’s defeat over Marta Gomez-Jordana 7-6, 6-2, Louisiana clenched the win over UALR.
Playing on first court for the first time this season, Angela Dangond had an uneasy start, losing her first set to Anne Weijenborg 4-6. Dangond came back in the second and third set, beating her opponent 6-1, 6-2.
UALR’s only win of the afternoon came from the upset of UL’s Milou Israel. Milou had lost the first set 2-6 to Chantal Coolen, but came back in the second set beating her 6-4. After a close tie-breaker, Milou lost 8-10.
Louisiana’s Tara Vasovic had her first home win when she defeated Nathalia Garay 7-6 in the first set. After losing 1-6 in the second, Vasovic came back and defeated Garay 11-9 in the tie-breaker.
This was head coach Tina Samara’s first win at UL and the team's first win of the season.
The Cajuns will be heading back to Cajun Courts Sunday morning to face Arkansas State at 10:00 A.M.
