UL Baseball BASEBALL RPI: Its never too early to start looking at it!

Baseball's here... and its NEVER too early to start looking at the old RPI (except for the Monday after the Nebraska series). Although there has been discussion in the past about whether WARRENNOLAN.COM's RPI rankings were the most accurate (our GOIN' GOLFING buddy Brian might have some other source), I went ahead and took a look at it. Hopefully we'll continue to move up, but considering our injuries and our rough start, we're not in that bad a shape.

Here is the link... http://www.warrennolan.com/baseball/2009/rpi ... and a few items I thought you might be interested in look over. We have played a pretty health schedule based on the SOS ranking.

(the first number is the current RPI ranking... and the second number is Strength of Schedule)

    Louisiana 56 38

    Texas 9 68
    Rice 18 23
    Sothern Miss 31 122
    Middle Tenn 33 130
    Miss State 39 151
    McNeese 38 139
    Troy 51 119
    Texas San Ant 58 95
    Lamar 66 195
    Alabama 69 111
    Tulane 70 105
    Texas A&M 74 179
    Miami 83 181
    Nebraska 116 171
    Southeastern 132 202
    Houston 148 60
    Stanford 131 62
    South Alabama 127 160
    Wichita State 182 250
    West Kentucky 219 276
    Arkansas State 248 219

    Oh... yeah... LaTechies... 178 213

Yea I follow warrennolan's website pretty closely every year and it's usually on the money when it comes to this. They also are very accurate at predicting the tournament field when it gets late in the season. All in all it's a good website. They slack on softball though, they have the rankings but thats pretty much it for the girls... they don't go into depth like they do for baseball.

I could be mistaken, but I think I remember Gone Golfin saying last year or the year before that Boyd Nation's RPI is the most accurate, with regard to similarity to the NCAA's RPI, which is what's used for the postseason.

Plus, Boyd has been known to visit here before.

When Furman and Elon are in the top 10, it's a little early to put too much stock into RPI ratings in my opinion. In a couple of months, I doubt either school will be in the top 25. That is good news that UL's SOS is pretty high because it will obviously take somewhat of a hit when SBC play rolls around.

Not if the conference keeps up what they are doing. Fau taking down #18 Florida and Troy taking down #23 Alabama. Also MTSU has been pounding the ball. Last week had a 2 games series with Memphis and scored over 15 runs in both games.

absolutely, clutch. sos is a big tell, not to mention an accurate indicator of the young season thus far.

The same site currently has the Sun Belt ranked as the 13th best conference from an RPI standpoint. I agree the Sun Belt is a solid baseball conference but it's certainly not in the upper tier.

Stick to a sport you know something about. The SBC has traditionally been in the top 10 baseball conferences, and has finished some seasons in recent years as high as 5th. 13th is a major slide.

Warren's RPI calculations are the base calculations and do not take into account the penalties and bonuses. Boyd's calculations are the most accurate that are publically available.

Paul Kislanko is the stats guru on SEBaseball and has done a lot of analysis on the RPI. The link below is from an article he did about five years ago on the RPI formulation. I'm pretty sure this is a free article and you don't have to be a subscriber.

And it actually is to early to look at the RPI. There is not enough inter-connectivity at this point between the teams. It will start to have some signifigance in about a month.
