BASEBALL RPI: Its never too early to start looking at it!

_ You are right about the SOS and RPI being in continuous motion... but, for instance, after this weekend LSU has 14 non-conference foes versus 30 conference foes. UL has about the same. But, UL will be facing LSU twice, Houston again, Tulane, and Rice in our mid week games, with a weekend series against East Carolina. LSU plays a lot of the same instate schools, but we actually play a tougher non-conference group once we both hit conference play. I'm only using that as an example of a not-too-accounted-for component of the continuous SOS calculation.

My point isn't about where the shifts generally begin to occur in different programs' SOS and RPI. I was commenting on you saying UL's SOS would take a "hit" once we hit conference play. We are not above the rest of the SBC in pre-conference SOS, we play similar OOC schedules, so I do not expect to "take an SOS hit" once we begin conference play. That was my point. _

Points well taken. Damn, I didn't realize the Cajuns still had so many good non-conference games left on the slate. This will certainly help both their RPI and SOS and hopefully they can win a couple of those games (other than LSU of course, lol). I'm man enough to admit that I probably did underestimate the SBC a little bit. Anyway, good luck today and I hope UL can take their first SBC series of the year.

The SBC is a pretty solid baseball conference. Even given the ranking from top to bottom of college baseball conferences, the parity in baseball is tighter than in other major men's sports. It would mean a lot for UL to take this away series today. We've had pretty solid pitching performances. Our batting is just not timely. It is so hard to tell listening on the radio if it is "our" batting or "their" pitching. Many "fans" rag on our batters for not hitting better. When a pitcher has his best stuff working... he can shut down 90% of the batters anywhere. If he does not, he cannot stop 90% of the batters, anywhere. He who takes advantage of a chink in the armor first (in even matchups) usually wins.

_ Warren's RPI calculations are the base calculations and do not take into account the penalties and bonuses. Boyd's calculations are the most accurate that are publically available.

Paul Kislanko is the stats guru on SEBaseball and has done a lot of analysis on the RPI. The link below is from an article he did about five years ago on the RPI formulation. I'm pretty sure this is a free article and you don't have to be a subscriber.

And it actually is to early to look at the RPI. There is not enough inter-connectivity at this point between the teams. It will start to have some signifigance in about a month. _

Don't worry, you aren't the only one worried about the hitting of your team. Illnois from the lowly Big 10 just took 2 out of 3 in Baton Rouge. LSU exploded yesterday but only mustered out three runs in the other two games. I could be wrong, but I'm sure LSU will face better pitching in the SEC compared to Illinois. Hell, I'd expect them to see better pitching from a few in-state schools including UL. It's not time to hit the panic button but the #1 team in America (which it's way too early to tell) shouldn't drop a home series against the Big 10. Hopefully the Cajuns can do their job and pull out their series this weekend.

I was at the games and while you guys pitched well. The offense is nothing to write home about

That being said all 3 games were played with a stiff wind blowing in, making the long ball nearly impossible. But both teams stunk this weekend at scoring runners once they got in scoring position

The only reason today went extra innings is because ASU twice failed to capitalize on a 2nd and 3rd 1 out situation
