That diploma is valid. That was the name of the university when those '84 graduates graduated.

I didn't say it wasn't, people in 99 got them as well. Trying to fight the name battle with that reason, so should the paper call us southwestern Louisiana? Because thousands of people have that on their diploma. Anyone against the name will say that, so stop giving them ammo to shut down your argument by using the diploma theory. Or they will say, I thought it's just athletic branding of Louisiana? Only way this will ever work is everybody getting on the same page and going in the sane direction, none of which will ever happen if the guys at the top don't take the lead and quit making everyone look like idiots.

Getting back to the original whizzing contest... I still do not agree that any media should or could not use "Louisiana" after the first use of "Louisiana Ragin Cajuns". That is our athletic nickname. We aren't making an argument for the "official name". When discussing athletics, we use Louisiana Ragin Cajuns, Louisiana, Ragin Cajuns, and Cajuns. I've never understood taking any outside entity's opinion of our athletic branding name and rationalizing any alternatives. The communication is between our SID and the media. I consider any deviation from those names unacceptable, when referring to our athletic programs.

However, I can understand that if our university president and administrative staff cannot follow the simple instructions they helped create, we can't exactly beat up on the media.

Everyone can choose to read or not read / buy or not buy particular media production. That is free choice.

My initial reservations about Luke have completely dissipated. He's a very good fact collector and writer. The name issue with the Advocate is squarely on the management of the paper and the UL admin.

I totally agree that this is on the head of UL management. Media are slaughtering our athletic name, mixing our official name, other outside generated deviations, etc... strictly due to the weak position and positions our university takes about 27 times each year. "They" are the perpetrators of mass confusion. They don't want to get in trouble with either of the most passionate sides of the argument, and so they ____ each of us off to the extreme, by being gutless cowards with the name.

Louisiana84 used his diploma argument in reference to BOP saying "get over it" WRT the Advocate not using "Louisiana". They missed each other's point slightly. Louisiana84 isn't going to "get over" having been there in 84 when this state pulled out it's banana republic political skills and jacked us. That is all he's saying. Jay is just trying to say that The Advocate isn't going to comply with calling us "Louisiana". He's not saying to get over our emotional issues about the name.

He has come on here saying that it is above him. He can write Louisiana all he wants, but it gets edited after he submits. No need to blast him. Email his superiors....which they have also responded to several people they are in a process now of working on a solution/fix.

No, I didn't graduate from UL.. But I was the FIRST ONE in the media to call us "Louisiana" and I've never let up. You don't think it's personal with me? Think again.

But I also know how the media works. Luke and Joe (the sports editor at the Advocate) did what I thought was a good job of explaining their position. Luke went as far as to say we won't get U-L-L'd to death anymore.

I say get over it, because you're wasting your time beating the drum expecting the Advocate to change. They aren't going to. There are other battles that can be won that are more worth your time and effort.

Let's concentrate on those...and win them together.

Understood, what doesn't hold water is those saying "That is the school name" "give it a rest."

Legal names as found on diplomas, articles of incorporation, birth certificates are rarely if ever used in media.

Example: WalMart's full name is not Wal-Mart.

For any media or self entity to use legal fullness of name as a crutch is humorous at best.
