Robe says that when he started, the big boys weren't pumping the money into baseball that they are now. But let's forget about all that. Let's just look at Robe on his own merits.
Consider a 10 year span:
1999, 42-24, sweep the Houston Regional with a win against Texas and two against UH, advance to Rice Super Regional, win one, lose two.
2000, 49-20, sweep your own Regional, go to #1 South Carolina (56-8), which had only lost TWO home games all season, but you hand the Gamecocks the only back-to-back losses they had all year to advance to the CWS.
Go to the College World Series, win two games, more than any debut team in the modern era, eliminate Clemson and San Jose State. (Remember, LSU didn't win a game in their first two or three trips.)
2002, 39-23, LSU Regionals, you defeat Tulane, give LSU its first Regional loss against a Louisiana public university, make it to the finals.
2005, Despite a 48-19 record and a Top-25 Ranking, the Cajuns are a #3 seed in the VERY top-heavy New Orleans Regional, where the #2 is 16th ranked Alabama (38-21) and the host is 50-9 National #1 Ranked Tulane. You win one, lose twice to 'Bama.
2007 End of season NCAA power ranking of #14, but NCAA screws you out of a Regional, you go to A&M and make the finals, defeating A&M before losing to them.
Now remember, we're in one of the better baseball conferences, stronger than some BCS conferences.
Forget about baseball. If you have a basketball coach who, in 10 years, takes you to the national tournament FIVE times, wins at least one game each time, makes it to the Regional finals (equivalent to a second round appearance in the basketball tournament) 4 times, to the Sweet 16 twice, and to the top 8 once with a top 4 finish...
... YOU gonna fire him, hoss??
I think it boils down to recruiting, specifically Texas recruiting. A large portion of our good players in the late 90's early 00's were from Texas. In the last few years we have been more LA and FLA. Because there are so many good baseball teams in LA, it is hard to recruit here. I think we need to get back to getting East Texas kids.
I call bullschit on this one. Name one major school that Tony interviewed for, what year and was offered a big contract. You say "many" and I am unaware of any official job interview or official job offer he ever received from anyone. Saying that you know a major college job was offered in private or offered in a private phone conversation is a lie.
Hold on... and what makes you so great to know that this is for fact a lie? I am not taking one side or another in this but for you to call that guy out and say that that would be a lie is ridiculous and I am not real sure how you are so certain that this is a lie? You honestly dont think that happens all the time?
I will be the FIRST one to say that this is ridiculous the way the baseball team has performed.. it really is.. but for you to say that Robe hasnt turned down any jobs is more ridiculous than the performance of the baseball teams.. Look at some of the coachs in college baseball who have gone on to bigger jobs who havent came close to the acheivments that Robe has accomplished, now all of them got bigger and better jobs but you think just nobody wants Robe? If you really do think that then you know, thats your opinion I guess.. I just happen to have a different one
attached is the lsu sked from '00 showing back to back wins over south carolina; they did lose the sunday game.
"Fri, Mar 24 South Carolina * Baton Rouge, La. (Alex Box Stadium) 7:00 p.m. W, 8-6
Sat, Mar 25 South Carolina * Baton Rouge, La. (Alex Box Stadium) 4:00 p.m. W, 7-6
Sun, Mar 26 South Carolina * Baton Rouge, La. (Alex Box Stadium) 12:30 p.m. L, 7-9"
as to the second part i bolded, it's hard to remember what you asked us to remember, since it is not true. lsu went 1-2 in their first cws appearance in '86, and then won twice the next year, getting eliminated on that stanford grand slam off ben mcdonald.
did you just throw your un-facts in because you felt they supported your argument? you do that alot; remember your deal about ul having more bowl appearances than south carolina "up until the last few years"? i guess you usually get away with your tactic. carry on.
Are we all on the same team here? Anyway, i'd rather get my behind handed to me by good teams than pounding bottom feeders. We will be fine. Chill. Attack the argument, not the person. Keep things in perspective, gents. Good thing about baseball is tomorrow's a new day. Good thing about cajuns fans is that we can discuss and disagree without becoming like every other gathering on the net (tiger droppings?).

OHNO OHNO OHNO.
OH PLEASE MR. GENIUS SONNNYSSISSYMIAMEMEMEMEMEME, PLEASE, DON'T EXPOSE ME FOR THE COMPLETE FRAUD I AM!!!!
OH, WOE IS ME! I MADE TWO MINISCULE ERRORS, AND MR. COMIC BOOK HERO HAS POINTED OUT THAT EVERYTHING EVERYTHING-- ipso facto, of course-- IS A COMPLETE LIE!!!
OH, OH, OH, WHAT SHALL I DOOOOO????!!!
Hmmm. Maybe I'll go over to Zeebart's for some pot roast.
Yeah. That oughta do it.
This thread is getting ugly. To say Robe was not a hot coach a few years back is ignoring reality. Even today he and the Lotief's are the only coaches who could get a better job at the drop of a hat.
As for this year, we all want a better start. The reality is that Robe is our coach and even a sub .500 season is not going to change that. Beeotching about our coach is a waste of time.
So far we have played some pretty good teams. I'm sure if we played Southern and Grambling we would be beating our chest right now. Lets see how we stack up to our next few foes before we dive into the depths of depression.
