And team #1 we used to play is 6th and team #2 we used to play is 7th. Does this poll mean this will be the las time we play USM? http://www.warrennolan.com/baseball/2009/npi
From my conversations with Southern Miss coach Corky Palmer, I expect the USM vs. UL series to be a yearly event as long as Palmer is at Southern Miss. The only thing that could change that is if UL's RPI fell off the table, and I don't think that's going to happen. Palmer is all about RPI and he considers UL to be a good RPI series, that's why he likes to play it home and home on a rotating basis.
Just to add a little perspective to this ranking...
GoneGolfin has pointed out before that it is unwise to put too much stock, or any stock, into RPI's this early into the season. I think he's stated that they don't really begin to tell an accurate story until about 20 games into the season. The main reason is that team's haven't had enough opponents, and the opponents haven't had enough opponents. And being that this ranking has a lot of similarities to an RPI, I think it would be wise to consider the inputs.
That is not to say that USM isn't mashing the crap out of the ball right now and that our pitching will put a quick stop to that tonight. But I'm just saying that in a few weeks, there's a good chance the this poll will look totally different, and will give a more accurate picture of how the season is panning out.
