Thread: N.C.A.A. Must Allow Colleges to Pay Athletes, Judge Rules

  1. Default N.C.A.A. Must Allow Colleges to Pay Athletes, Judge Rules

In a decision that could drastically reshape the world of college sports, a federal judge ruled on Friday that the N.C.A.A.’s decades-old rules barring payments to college athletes were in violation of antitrust laws.

In a 99-page ruling, Judge Claudia Wilken of United States District Court in Oakland, Calif., delivered a resounding rebuke to the foundation of the N.C.A.A., issuing an injunction against current rules that prohibit athletes from earning money from the use of their names and images in video games and television broadcasts.

I wonder if UL can get reparations from the death penalty years.

This decision will relegate the mid-majors to minor league status ... good players in competitive games, but not competing at the highest levels.

Also, I understand that the ruling basically applies to the revenue sports, football and basketball ????

Just when we get some momentum and building the program, this will devastate the non-P5 schools.

I fear that we won't need any more expansion. This could conceivably cripple the non-P5s. I hope I'm wrong.

You know what, go ahead and pay the players. Here you go buddy, $5000 per semester. But you now have to pay for school, room and board, and meals. But you're paid now so there you go....I'm in college now. I would love to go to school for free just for playing a sport. I would much rather do that than have to work nearly every night as a bartender just to pay off school and other expenses. The ncaa is turning into a joke.

I don't know why everyone is worried considering the entitled, everybody gets a trophy, life is fair, everything is discrimination world we live in. There will be so many appeals, law suits etc. we will all be dead before they figure this out. The P5 will now call the shots, big deal...they have been calling the shots.

It will be funnier when they start dealing with hold outs, I can see it now, lsu starting qb won't get off the bus until he receives 10k in stipend.

I honestly hope it backfires on all the P5 schools and completely burns their programs into the ground.

Wonder if the GPA, class attendance requirements, APR, etc. will be the next to be challenged. Afterall, why should Studley Bonehead go to class? He's just paid to run the ball or take the head off opposing receivers or dunk the basketball. He is now an employee hired for a job not a student. Put student-athlete in a museum next to other extinct creatures like the dodo bird.

I hate saying this, but when this time comes, I really think I will quit donating to rcaf and paying for season tickets.

All this will lead to is more tatoos and vehicle accessory purchases. I ain't helping foot that bill for 18 year olds. If my hard earned money is gonna go towards athletes pockets, it's gonna be to at least watch the elite of the elite in the traditional professional ranks.

Boy, they've really done a fantastic job of destroying college athletics over the past couple years.

Same here. I refuse to give money to a cause like that. And I hope others feel the same way. Which should in turn cause all this to backfire. Hopefully. Fingers crossed.
